  • Advertising  ( 4 items )

Internet advertising is a large and complex topic. Over the years, hundreds of questions and answers have been posted to the LED Digest related to advertising online. These topics are being organized here, with advertising perspectives from publishers, business owners, and site visitors alike.

More information: the Wikipedia entry on Internet marketing is a good place to start. Other resources of note are the Interactive Advertising Bureau and eMarketer. Another worthwhile resource is the Online Advertising discussion list. While the list is no longer very active, the archives are valuable for media buyers and ad industry types.

    How this works:

Each subject heading below links to a discussion page with all the posts in that thread. The date at left marks the original post that started the thread. Subjects here can have anywhere from a single post to well over 50 per topic. It just depends how popular that particular thread is. For more specific information, check out my handy-dandy How to Use this Site guide.

The filter field below allows you to quicky find topics by title. Please use it with caution, though, because if it can't find a keyword match it sometimes throws an error.

  • Blogging  ( 1 items )

Blogs have transformed the Web. By making self-publishing effortless and its distribution hyper-efficient, amateurs and professionals across the world have used blogging for business, recreation, politics, sports, technology, industry and virtually every market that exists. Basically, if you don't publish a blog today you are neglecting a super-efficient and ubiquitous marketing channel. This is especially true as social media begins to offer legitimate alternatives to search.

More information: Here's a good run-down on blogs with a survey of their history at Wikipedia. A dated but venerable introductory history to blogs is at Robot Wisdom. Many people use and trust Technorati. And check out this interview with sci-fi author William Gibson in 1996 where he foresaw blogging and social media.

Pretty soon I think there'll be people who make a living pre-surfing [the Web] for you. There's a real need for that -- otherwise it becomes this monster time-sink. You can just sit there forever. Looking. Looking. And maybe not finding anything. Seeing a lot of goofy stuff.

  • Content Management Systems  ( 2 items )

Content Management Systems (CMS for short) are, quite simply, essential tools for large Web sites. They are perfect for sites with many pages of content and integrate well with databases like MySQL or ASP. Even smaller sites can benefit from the easy updating features CMS allow. Below you'll find related discussions from the LED email list on these exciting tools.

More information: Definitely check out the Wiki entry on content management systems first. Two very popular open source CMS are Joomla! and Drupal. Joomla is usually considered more flexible for attractive designs and has a massive amount of add-on components and modules. Drupal is a bit more serious and may be faster loading with a more compliant code base. You should also check out Wordpress and Typepad, which are blogging tools primarily but do very well as CMS; each one has lots of third-party add-ons available. Wordpress is open source and Typepad requires a license (unless you want to host your blog on their domain for free).

  • Domains and Web Hosting  ( 1 items )

Domain names are pretty essential. You won't get very far launching a Web site without one! This category of the site contains all the discussions related to domains, hosting sites, networking issues, and much more that have been published in the LED discussion list.

It's interesting to watch how, as competition on the Web continues to rise amid ever more market crowding, the URL you choose can influence your site's success.

More information: Here's a good primer on domain names from Wikipedia. Check out Domain Name Daily which is actually the old i-Domain discussion list from Adventive. It is now being hosted by Soflow; Keith Pieper is the moderator. For related information about the robots.txt protocol, see Martijn Koster's Web Robots Pages at robotstxt.org. And of course no reference list would be complete without ICANN and Internic.

  • Ecommerce Topics  ( 3 items )

Ecommerce. In one way or another, it's why most Internet marketers do what they do. Either selling leads, widgets, column inches, or eyeballs, the end goal is often dependent upon an ecommerce transaction; and for small business retailers, converting targeted leads is all that matters. This category contains a plethora of topics related to selling online, such as shopping cart software and services, retail strategies and issues (such as cart abandonment and conversions), merchant accounts, international payments, and much more.

More information: A good place to start is the Wikipedia entry on electronic commerce. You should also take a few moments to read this early survey of ecommerce from the Economist. For ecommerce news and views, Internet Retailer is worthwhile, and (though heavily laden with ads), so is the ecommerce guide at Internet.com. There are tons of great blogs that cover ecommerce topics as well, just do a tag search on Technorati.

  • Email Publishing and Marketing  ( 4 items )

Although much of the effectiveness of email marketing has eroded due to massive spam increases, email as a communications tool is still being relied upon by 99.9% of the Web population, and email publishers are continuing to see growth and responses using ethical techniques. We've featured literally hundreds of discussions related to publishing newsletters and lists on the LED Digest. The bottom line for marketers is this: if you're not actively gathering email addresses for an ethical in-house list, you're losing potential revenues and opportunities to build customer loyalty, remarket, and continue to connect with your target market.

More information: It's difficult to assemble a definitive list of resources on the subjects of email publishing and marketing. That said, here are a few places to start. Christopher Knight's EmailUniverse has good information, and he's been in the field a long time. Advanced and veteran email publishers would do well to apply to his private discussion list, ePubPros. While discussions are very sparse, the list contains a handful of highly influential members and many experienced marketers. Larry Chase created a helpful resource with his best practices for email publishing. Be aware of the techniques he uses to encourage newsletter sign-ups in this piece, while they can be intrusive, they're also likely very effective. These strategies work well for his target market but may be too aggressive for other niches.

  • Fighting Spam  ( 5 items )

Spam is annoying at best, but it can be time consuming and costly at worst. The main problem cited by many recipients of spam is that bandwidth costs are put on the shoulders of the recipients rather than the senders. Additionally, it can be personally offensive to receive vulgar or pornographic spam emails. We've seen hundreds of questions asked and answers given about spam over the years on the LED, and this category will contain them all, both from the the client and publisher sides. Topics are particularly focused on filtering and anti-spam solutions.

More information: The best place on the Web to start is the Wikipedia entry on e-mail spam. From there many excellent resources are cited, and we can mention the Federal Trade Commissions anti-spam resource pages and SpamCop's spam reporting service (which is free) as being especially useful. Also check out this page on fighting spam which has some excellent tips for protecting your email address on the Web.
