In LED 1992, David Starr said, "I've been a bit disappointed with where the list has gone in recent months". I'm not sure what it is lately, but I kind of agree with his statement. One thing I have noticed is the absence of any Moderator comments. When I first subscribed back in the I-Sales day, it seemed like the Moderator (John Audette at the time, and a few others since) would step in and add comments to either further discussions of a topic, to maybe change the direction of the discussion when deemed necessary, or even to stimulate new discussions of hot button topics maybe at a time when posts were low. All a lot of work for a Moderator no doubt, and work I'm glad I'm not in charge of doing or getting done. The LED Digest is one email that I would pretty much read all the way through, word for word, and I have learned and hope to continue to keep learning from those who take the time to post. The last few weeks or so I find that I am skimming quite a bit. There does seem to be something missing as of late. I am still confident that LED Digest is still the premier email discussion list on Internet Marketing and Business available, and that the list is moderated by a well qualified and knowledgeable individual to lead the subscribers down a road of continued knowledge and learning. Lately though, there has been a lull of some sort. Maybe it's a summer thing here in the US, I don't know... I realize that there is only so much room for posts and I am certainly not saying a Moderator comment is required for each post, or even each edition. All I am trying to say is that it seems as though this list has been on 'auto-pilot' mode for a little bit now, and maybe we need the 'Captain' to get on the microphone and tell us what we are flying over every once in a while. ;-) Regards, Steve Birk, Emergency Med Tech www.medcenternews.com <Moderator Comment> Thanks very much for your comments, Steve. I'm appreciative of what this list has become and that you care so much about its growth. You're absolutely right -- I've been out of it lately. For the last several months I've been distracted and less inclined to dedicate my time to the LED and other discussion lists and publishing projects. I owe you an explanation, and maybe a comment or two, about where the list is heading. (As if it's up to me -- I consider this list as "run" by you, the subscribers -- and myself as more of a caretaker.) First of all the quick and personal: my newly wedded wife, Sally, is pregnant and our baby is due in late September. That's enough to rock the boat a bit. :-) I'm also in school again full time, which takes lots of time and effort. Needless to say, I've had my opportunities for distraction. Phew -- those fraternity parties really take a toll on you! (completely kidding, of course... at my age it'd be a bit like Will Ferrell in the movie Old School...) As my attention has been slowly removed from the list and placed elsewhere, the quality here has definitely slid. And I think you make a terrific point about the "summer lull". This time of year always slows way down, as I'm seeing on a couple of normally active discussion lists. Enough about me -- what about you? What are your comments, criticisms, hopes and dreams? Or at least, what do you want in the LED? It's a great time to explore where we are and where we want to go. Let me know! Thanks for ripping the sheet off the corpse, Steve. I feel better already. :-) Best wishes, Adam ===== CONTINUING ================================= From: Martha Retallick Subject: SEO Pricing & False economy > ... how crazy is my pricing structure, and how crazy is this > client? Am I a fool for selling this service for so cheap, or for > thinking that I can get paid for over ten years of experience? - Robert Bedard, LED 1987 Here's my US $.02 worth: I tell my clients straight-out that they should expect to pay at least $1,000 for their first year of search engine positioning work. I'm also not afraid to tell them that I have been in the web design business for a decade, that I've learned a lot of things during that time that could benefit them, and that I'm not the cheapest designer in town. The above paragraph has precisely the desired effect on the price-shoppers: It sends them running for the hills. Robert, the clients who respect you for your expertise and experience are definitely out there. And those people are more than willing to pay what those things are worth. But, word of warning, they're not going to do so if you focus on competing on price. After all, people who are loyal to the dollar are never loyal to you. Martha Retallick Western Sky Communications http://www.westernskycommunications.com ==== BILLBOARD =================================== From: Michael Martinez Subject: Inbound links > Why would Google show 67 inbound links, Yahoo 500 > and MSN 2200? And what's the easiest thing to do about it? - Michael Linehan, LED 1993 Google has been showing only partial inbound links for a couple of years to discourage SEO specialists from running queries against their database. Generally speaking, you can estimate the number of links Google has indexed by dividing the number of links Yahoo! reports by .9. That is only an approximation, and you cannot be sure that Google has indexed everything Yahoo! and MSN report. In fact, a recent study suggests there is considerably less overlap in the databases than has been previously estimated by third parties. Google is not as sensitive to inbound linkage as Yahoo! anyway. Most Google rankings can be optimized through other factors. Only a relatively few search expressions have been so hyperoptimized that you MUST obtain large numbers of inbound links to rank well on Google.
