If you REALLY need the bells and whistles then whether company or
contractor makes no difference, so long as you are the owner of the
results. It's a contract issue.

BUT

Ask yourself very carefully whether or not you do need them, because
as soon as you modify code you are locking yourself into a long term
maintenance  process that will cost money, whoever does it for you.

(For example I can extend Drupal by writing php Blocks, and tweaking
the code, but I tell all my clients that they really don't want me
to, unless absolutely vital, because as soon as they do, I'm likely
to have to keep tweaking for every new release, and that will cost
them money).

Also note that the rough rule of thumb - "programmers cost double
their quote" applies because in most cases the spec turns out to be
incomplete - ie you take delivery and realise you need a few tweaks,
or that what you asked for isn't quite what you need.

Huge Generalisation - contractors tend to be more forgiving than
companies.

Hint - make sure that you insist that the work is fully documented
so that ANY other suitable programmer can take it over, (long term
maintenance /upgrade ). Programmers hate documenting - just look at
anything open source! Allow budget to test this by having a suitable
programmer look at it and tell you if it is completely documented.

Cheers

Check out Miva Merchant shopping cart.  It has a lot of variety and
ablity to be tweaked for just about any storefront imaginable.  It
is a bit pricy but it has all the bells and whistles and more
options that you can add on then any other shopping cart I have
found.

Miva is a great ecommerce software and there are many designers who
can modify it to your liking.  We have a tutorial site for it at
http://mivahelp.com

You will find some designers listed at http://snipurl.com/hmtw
[dmoz.org] and module vendors who sell addons to the cart at
http://snipurl.com/hmtx  [dmoz.org]

Adding modules in Miva is a breeze.  The hardest part is decidng
which credit card you want to pay with... and that is not too hard
considering that most modules sold are below $50.

You can stop all image stealing using the .htaccess files see
http://www.htmlite.com/HTA013.php which explains how to do this.

Now the only question I have, is that if you stop the bandwidth
stealing as above, how do you let Froogle show your images.

Subject: Image stealing

We suffered a similar problem, and the page showing our image was
getting a lot of hits. I sent an e-Mail to the sites owner politely
asking them to at least host our image themselves if they were going
to steal it. There was no response.

This is where DreamWeaver is wonderful! (I am sure other programs
can do this). I renamed the image, all the references to it on our
site were changed by DreamWeaver. Then I changed the original image
to one that said 'We steal art from other sites at their expense'.
It took them about 2 days to take the link out, but they never stole
from us again!

And yes, I do know it was juvenile, but honestly, it was fun!
