Subject: Keeping a Web Site Fresh

One of the biggest problems with a web site is keeping it fresh and
up-to-date looking.

I've recently put together a picture gallery and shop for a company
and have used a piece of software called JAlbum to develop the
gallery.  You just put a picture into a directory on your PC and
then run JAlbum and the gallery is updated.  What would be much
better if you could link each picture to the on-line shop.

I've searched for something to do this and can't find anything
suitable, easy and at the right price.  So I'm probably going to
write it myself, basing it on something like an Excel spreadsheet.
You would just select the image, at a title and a comment and then
add the link to the shopping database.

The whole idea would be that the company could add products
themselves, so that I get paid for consultancy rather than daily
grind.

Has anybody else got any simple ideas on keeping a web site fresh.

> Is DMOZ on it's way out or here to stay?
        - Renee Kennedy, LED 2025

I don't think Renee's poor experience getting listed in DMOZ is
anything new, so on that front I don't think one can say that DMOZ
is on the way out.

The way I see it from an SEO perspective, is that any search engine
worth it's salt must know that DMOZ is far from complete, and
shouldn't be placing too much emphasis on a listing there. It is
probably true that a site listed with DMOZ is good, but it cannot be
inferred that one not listed is of poor quality.

I notice that Google no longer has Directories as an option on its
home page; it has to be accessed from the 'more' page. Interesting
that it gives priority to Usenet and Image search.

As for the 4000 mirror sites, I doubt that any search engine places
much emphasis on their value. For the most part DMOZ is a just a
cheap way of building content on which to place paid advertising.
Not to mention all that duplicated content all over the web.

Probably the biggest loss for sites not listed is for those users
who use directories. But then is any directory complete?

So, from those perspectives, maybe Renee is right, and Dmoz is on
the way out.

One approach Renee may like to consider is listing in another
category. Sometimes regional is an easier way to go, such as

        - Renee Kennedy, LED 2025

Actually, when it comes to SEO, DMOZ is no longer that important.
You've made the submission.  That is it.  Move on.  There are other
directories out there.  It will suffice if you get listings in any
two of DMOZ, Yahoo!, JoeAnt, Zeal (non-commercial only), GoGuides,
or similar directories.

Remember that there are business directories out there which let you
include a Web site URL in the listings (you may have to pay for that
with some of them, including some of the really good ones).

Check out Yahoo! Local, Switchboard, and SBC's SmartPages to begin
with.

The story I've heard on DMOZ is this:

A lot of the category editors run their areas as if they were
private fiefdoms. In other words, if your site is a competitor to
theirs, your chances of listing your site in DMOZ are somewhere
between slim and none.

From: Richard Dudley
Subject: Microsoft

I think reports of Microsoft's death are very premature.  Gates is
hedging his bets on more than just PCs and home use.  MS's business
applications set the standard (especially SharePoint and its
integration with Office products).

It's easy to say that MS is dying because it doesn't garner press
attention or its sales increases are relatively small, but those
measures can be deceiving.  Fast Company recently had an article
about this topic, with some interesting statistics (which I reposted
on my blog at http://www.rjdudley.com/blog/TheMassivenessOfMicrosoft.aspx).

In addition to their business software, Microsoft's development
tools are also top notch, and only getting better.  The .NET
platform provides an extremely rich framework, and Visual Studio is
outstanding.  The .NET framework has been ported to other platforms
such as Linux and MacOS, which adds one more reason to develop with
MS's latest tools

of Jupiter's analysts has high marks for the upcoming offerings from

I agree. I participate in many forums and finally started one on my
site, The Back Fence, but it takes a real effort to get people
posting. I see yours is obviously well read but notice how thousands
of people read and only a few will post. Similar to LED, right Adam?

I hosted a live chat (forum based) last night at
http://www.weightlossbuddy.com. I think I'll do more of those at The
Back Fence as well. People like community and forums are wonderful
for creating community at a site. Plus since I get so many e-mails,
I really like to send a reply that literally thousands can read it
and benefit by rather than just the original sender.

I've heard a little about Mambo supposed capabilities, but does
anyone out there have actual experience using it? What's your
opinion, is it as good as or better than similar licensed products
for maintaining content?
