Subject: Junk Mail & Storms

In the last several weeks I have noticed my junk mail has been
reduced by about 75%. I have done nothing and can think of no other
reason than Katrina & Rita!

Any thoughts on this?

From: Eva Rosenberg
Subject: "Seeking to Advertise" Affiliate Messages

Dear Adam,

I have just started getting a series of e-mails with the subject
line "Seeking to Advertise on Your Site" (or, on TaxMama.com).

Upon reading them, they turn out to be from folks running affiliate
programs inviting me to join. Most of them, clearly have never been
to my site - or they would see that my audience is not a target for
their products.

I responded to the first one, explaining that fact, also, that even
if they did have a product or service that might be compatible, I
wouldn't refer it. Why?

Because of their deceptive pitch. If they can be so deceptive
setting up their relationship with me,  just how deceptive will they
be in marketing to my readers. I will not waste my energies
responding to the rest. I will just code them as spam.

In short, my friends, if you or your affiliate managers are engaged
in using this new pitch to attract affiliates, STOP.

You have no idea how many sites you will alienate.

Some of us might have joined your affiliate program if you had
contacted us honestly. Now, all you're doing is to establish
yourselves as liars.

Just one TaxMama's opinion.

Best wishes

Subject: Google PageRank

> People, stop talking about PageRank. Take that stupid toolbar out
> of your browsers, because it is NOT telling you anything useful.
        - Michael Martinez, LED 2028

Michael, although, I value your opinions, I have to disagree with
you about PageRank.  I believe that Google PageRank tells us
"something" about the way that the Google algorithm will rank
listings in Google.  I've seen that when a site's root pages have a
PageRank of 7 or more, that site becomes like gold in the search
engines.  Any page that you put on a site like that (if it is
properly designed and optimized) will start bringing in
substantially more traffic than a page that has a PageRank of 6 or
below.

I'm not saying that we should stand around and just watch our Google
PageRank, but I strongly feel that it's one method of determining
how a site is doing in the search engines.

We can sit back and not look at PageRank or Alexa Ranking or
WebPosition (all of these have been trashed at some point), but if
you do that, how will you measure your success?  What "outside"
metrics do you propose that we provide our clients if we aren't
going to use those?  Site statistics are great, programs like
Omniture and HBX can tell us up to the minute details on site
traffic, referrers, most popular pages, etc. etc.  But having the
outside metrics of PageRank, Alexa, WebPosition, and a Link
Popularity checker, also are important to showing the client a
steady progression by an "outside" reference point.

What other metrics are you using besides the ones I mentioned?

I use Go Daddy's "Online File Folder" service located at
http://www.dpbolvw.net/click-545835-10378406, that's my affiliate
link.

I have been using this service to backup my business files for a few
months and love it.  It keeps all my work files backed up and secure
off-site.  It also gives you software to download that keeps your
files synced with your online file folder.  I have only used this
service for a few months but it has already saved me a couple times.

Kind Regards,

Ben Cunningham

        - Michael Linehan, LED 2026

No need to wait for Microsoft for crashes.  I have a combination
stereo / record player / cassette player / cd changer (about 3 years
old).  About once every second month the CD player will lock up,
refusing to open the tray or to play any CD already inserted.  Have
to unplug the system, wait a few minutes, then plug it back in.
This restores things to normal, presumably the internal system
reboots.

One son has a DVD player that will occasionally freezes.  Same
routine - unplug, wait a few minutes, plug back in, fast forward to
spot in movie where freeze occurred, then continue watching.  Next
time the same DVD will play through with no problem so presumably it
is a software problem and the unplug / replug routine reboots the
system.

Subject: Ecommerce Solution for Training Products

My clients are looking for an ecommerce solution that they can use
for online registrations for seminars and workshops, as well as
selling downloadable products (e.g., webinars, e-books, white
papers).

For the webinars, they want a download link that will expire in two
weeks.

Do you have any recommendations for shopping carts that are
versatile, user-friendly and cater to online registrations /
downloadable products?
