I thought that LEDers might be interested in having a look at this to get some idea of what spammers are using to send out their garbage - things like being able to blast out 500,000 emails an hour, customizing headers (i.e. faking the "From"), using "multiple proxies and relays" (i.e. using insecure mail servers to try to hide the real source of the SPAM), etc, etc. Anyway, have a look at http://www.dark-mailer.com/, particularly the Features and FAQ. This is very educational, and will give you some idea of the kind of thing we are fighting. The problem is you are targeting the wrong keywords. "nature video" has 6.8 million page matches at Google but only 902 searches at Overture last month. This gives a results / searches ratio of 7539, way too high to get good rankings on. You need to target keywords that have a relatively high number of searches (demand) to page matches (supply). I use a software program called Keywords Analyzer which automates your research. It can be done manually, but KA saves me a lot of time. Also, even with a favourable results / searches ratio it's not enough to just have your keywords in your meta tags. You need lots of "visable" text on your site with your keywords sprinkled throughout. You also need to build some incoming links to your site, preferably from sites closely related to yours. Cheers Steve Pronger http://www.stevepronger.com ------- new post - same topic ------- From: Bruce M. Clay Subject: Keywords The problem is at line 221 - you have two head and body sections, both with titles. I assume that your software is incorrectly nesting these sections. The search engines probably think of it as spam, but they are also likely more advanced and are seeing the intended tags. If I can see it, the search engines can see it: http://www.bruceclay.com/temp/naturelibrarycom.htm Hope this helps. Bruce Clay Bruce Clay, LLC http://www.bruceclay.com ------- new post - new topic ------- From: Bob Cavanagh Subject: DMOZ > I had my website redesigned a few months ago, and the designer > changed my web address from www.kitchendesignbyjoanne.com > to http://kitchendesignbyjoanne.com. - Joanne Cannell, LED 1765 Joanne, You should be able to get your hosting service to set up your site so that both www.kitchendesignbyjoanne.com and kitchendesignbyjoanne.com are equivalent. This should solve your immediate problem. We've also found that many people insist on putting the www at the beginning of every URL so you might find this change helpful in the long run. Bob Cavanagh, Director of Technology Queen's School of Business ------- new post - same topic ------- From: Paul Baldowski Subject: DMOZ Joanne, You seem to have totally lost me here. After years of working on websites and managing my own domains, this seems totally bizarre. I'm not sure what your web designer has been telling you, but www.kitchendesignbyjoanne.com and http://kitchendesignbyjoanne.com are the same thing. The first address is missing the http:// and the second is missing the www. - but these are quite simply the same address. Therefore, if you've submitted both to DMOZ all you've managed to do is confuse your own listing - no wonder the DMOZ system is struggling. Maybe they missed it when the update was submitted. Right now, I'd question your web designer about why he or she has led you to believe that they've made some kind of change to your site and managed to confuse DMOZ into the bargain! Paul Baldowski www.boreders.com ==== BILLBOARD ==================================== From: Chris Nielsen Subject: Attraction pages > I was recently approached by a company that guaranteed > us top 10 ranking on multiple search engines. I was suspicious... > They talked about creating "attraction pages". - Tom Ulbrich, LED 1765 Hi Tom, Old trick, new name... they used to be called "door way" pages. The problem is if they are detected they can put you in worse shape that you were before. Perfectly legitimate? I'm working on my congressman, but that's true. However, ask them to point out where the use of additional content that is created to "attract" search engines is allowed and see what they say? They can work, but it's taking a risk that is really not worth it, since there is scum out there (like me) that will report stuff like that when they find it in the search engine results. And here's the thing: Why add new content when what you have can be optimized? Site owners should consider all of their site pages as "doorway" pages and optimize them for what they have. It's easy and it works. No big deal and no tricks. If you have the time and the interest you can do the keyword research and optimized your pages with keywords that and used to create good English text content. If you are not getting much "free" traffic then you should find someone that can help you get your fair share of what is out there. You already have a good sense of when someone is "not quite right", so you should have no problem finding someone who will have your best interests in mind when they give you advice. Good Luck! Chris Nielsen Best Free Search Engine List - Hand Submission System http://www.best-free-search-engine-list.com ------- new post - same topic ------- From: Jill Whalen Subject: Attraction pages Tom asked about "attraction pages." These are no different than doorway pages, gateway pages or my favorite "zebra pages." Basically, a rose by any other name... and all that. Hope this helps! Jill Whalen Join the new High Rankings Forum! http://www.highrankings.com/forum ------- new post - same topic ------- From: Don Baker Subject: Attraction pages Sounds suspicious to me, too, Tom. It all depends on what they mean by "attraction pages," and what those pages will contain. It's possible to create legitimate pages that are very focused on one or two keyphrases, with title, meta tags and text that contain those keyphrases, and get those pages into the top 10 when searching on those keyphrases. Our clients have multiple pages in this situation, and it's just because we've tuned the pages to provide legitimate info using legitimate SEM practices. However, it's far more likely this company will create doorway pages that spam the search engines through a variety of unethical / banned practices. These pages could indeed garner top-10 rankings for a while, before one or more engines blacklists your domain. I would ask the company for details on what these "attraction pages" will look like and contain, and certainly try to find out if this company has satisfied clients that are legitimate companies in their own right. Good luck.
