I assume that your software > is incorrectly nesting these sections. - Bruce Clay, LED 1766 DING DING DING!!! We have a winner! This was clearly it. My software didn't show that duplication on the creation end. With some deeper research guided by the wonderful Bruce Clay I was able to find and correct the cause. What was happening was that I had those additional 'head' and 'body' tags inside my includes, which, once uploaded... revealed themselves in the HTML. Now when I run those same optimizations I had run before, I get proper recognized results as one should expect. Many thanks to the LED list and especially Bruce Clay for his superior sleuthing abilities. Thank you also to Steve Ponger for the insightful remarks. I will continue to refine my target and work on those incoming links... and since I have you all here... do i have any takers? Couldn't resist... All the best and continued success, George Oliver ------- new post - same topic ------- From: Peter Warnock Subject: Keywords I noticed that your Robots meta-tag is missing an "S". Since this isn't a valid meta-tag, search engine robots don't have explicit instruction to index the page. Peter Warnock webstruction.com ------- new post - new topic ------- From: Brad Waller Subject: DMOZ > I had my website redesigned a few months ago, and the designer > changed my web address from www.kitchendesignbyjoanne.com > to http://kitchendesignbyjoanne.com. - Joanne Cannell, LED 1765 I've seen a few confused replies here. First, the www is actually optional, and you could use anything you want, such as ww1., search., classifieds., kitchens., etc. Convention is that www. is the default web server address, and good hosts make sure that www. is equivalent to without the prefix. That said, DMOZ uses the exact characters to determine a site. For example, our listing is for "http://ep.com/" in the "Shopping: Classifieds: Free Classifieds" category. But if I submitted this domain with the www, or maybe even without the trailing "/", the DMOZ editors could see this as a different listing. DMOZ does not list a base URL only once. They will add a site if submitted to an editor and the editor likes the entry. For example, we also have a listing for the URL "http://ep.com/js/help/cspovw.html" in the category "Computers: Internet: Web Design and Development: Authoring: Webmaster Resources: Affiliate Programs: Per Sale Programs". This is what has happened with you. You have one listing for Joanne Cannell Kitchen Designs - "http://kitchendesignbyjoanne.com" in the category "Business: Construction and Maintenance: Design: Kitchen and Bath" and a second listing for Joanne Cannell Designs - "http://www.kitchendesignbyjoanne.com/" in the category "Regional: North America: United States: California: Localities: S: San Francisco: Business and Economy: Construction and Maintenance" You can see them both through this link: http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/search?search=kitchendesignbyjoanne By submitting the second listing with the alternate URL, you have gained an additional listing in DMOZ. Brad Waller Content for your Web site www.ep.com/js/help/cspovw.html ------- new post - same topic ------- From: Deke Hammel Subject: DMOZ > I'm not sure what your web designer has been telling you, but > www.kitchendesignbyjoanne.com and > http://kitchendesignbyjoanne.com are the same thing. The first > address is missing the http:// and the second is missing the > www. - but these are quite simply the same address. - Paul Baldowski, LED 1766 Not quite so simply. That "www" indicates a subdomain. In order to make domain.tld and www.domain.tld the same address, you must have both domain names resolve to the same IP, and you must have the http daemon configured to serve both domains out of the same root directory, most commonly by aliasing. For a long time, Tom Christensen ran different sites on www.perl.com and perl.com, even though both sites were on the same server. My bank, Blue Ball National, can be reached at http://www.bbnb.com, but there's no DNS entry for bbnb.com. (The server is configured to respond, regardless of domain name, to listen and respond to any requests on IP 63.67.117.147) Deke Hammel web [at] master.gen.in.us ==== BILLBOARD ==================================== From: Allen Chou Subject: Submit Wizard by Network Solutions? Does anyone have any experience or feedback using Network Solutions' "Submit Wizard Professional Service" ? Did it help with your ranking in the major search engines? Thanks, Allen Chou ------- new post - new topic ------- From: Mike Banks Valentine Subject: Attraction pages > I was recently approached by a company that guaranteed > us top 10 ranking on multiple search engines. I was suspicious... > They talked about creating "attraction pages". - Tom Ulbrich, LED 1765 Tom, stay away from companies that do anything besides the basics of Search Engine Optimization. Here's the list that reputable companies concentrate on. 1) YOUR web site architecture is adjusted - mostly adding additional substantial VISIBLE text or adjusting existing VISIBLE text content on your pages and including the following. 2) Good site map including hard coded links to every page on your site that you want indexed by the search engines - then link to the site map from the home page. 3) TEXT links - NOT images with words painted on them by graphics programs that use image swaps in extensive javascript driven eye candy. Search engines can't read graphics, they read TEXT. 4) TITLE tags that reflect differing page content of every page on your site. The biggest mistake seen across the majority of poorly ranking sites is using precisely the same TITLE tags for every page of the site, usually including a catch phrase that is WORTHLESS for keyword targeting and has nothing to do with the text on the page it titles. 5) Gain external links pointing to your site from relevant businesses - NOT LINK SWAPS, link farms or link trades. The most valuable link you can have is from DMOZ (Open Directory), no matter how hard it is to get. Next most valuable would be from your business category at Business.com directory. If you write articles, contribute to the appropriate "Guide Site" at About.com to see if they'll publish yours, then make sure you click the "Link to my Site" box on the article contribution form. While you are writing articles, join a few of the lists that distriubute articles to members and send yours to the lists (links from your "resource box" are the standard and gain you links wherever your article is used by others). Links are a controversial and complicated game that everyone has an opinion on, but few master. Now the DON'T DO's. Never allow any firm to create "Doorway Pages", "Attraction Pages", "Keyword Domains", "Dedicated Directories" or any form of "Spider Food". I was recently hired to clean up the mess left by a company that had done this previously for a new client. It was more expensive for my new client to clean up than it had been for that disreputable company to originally put it in place. We were fortunate in getting those hundreds of bogus pages removed from the search engines before they were discovered and banned. Never use "Cloaking" or "IP Delivery" which are just a couple of fancy names for deception. I've got a client using that technique (because they were sold the software years ago) and we are slowly trying to wean them away from it. Trying to keep filenames, directories and multiple copies of pages dedicated to different search engines is a nightmare for that client. We've convinced them to get honest with the search engines and drop the deception. If a search engine firm promises top 10 rankings, it's a good indication they are unethical and care more about making the sale than getting your site positioned well. Guarantees are fake unless tied to Pay-Per-Click rankings. THAT is not search engine positioning, it is search engine ADVERTISING. Mike Banks Valentine http://seoptimism.com ------- new post - same topic ------- From: Mark Frank Subject: Attraction pages Tom, You are right to question this. Attraction pages, doorway pages, or what ever you call them, can get you banned. Even if you get away with it for a while, you take the risk of getting thrown out later. The best way to get (and keep) good ranking is to develop content pages that are keyword rich and that are targeted to your audience. It is unlikely an outside party will provide this for you (although some can). Ask to see samples of their work. You will quickly see if it is the sort of thing you would want to show your customers or not. If they are not willing to show you samples and use "customer proprietary" or "confidential", sent them on their way.
