I have not done a bunch of it, but I know two of the bigger brokers
on the market are Patrick Gavin and TextLinkBrokers.

There are many fake link broker who are nothing more than resellers,
so you will want take the time to find one of the sources. Also some
webmasters sell links to any site and get their outbound PageRank
blocked to where they do not transfer any.

Ajeet,

Have you seen http://www.marketbanker.com it's a company run by the
same guy who did f***edcompany.com.  With it you can buy or sell
text link advertising.

I've been using it for a while.  The ads aren't as targeted as
something like Google's Adsense but the nice thing about it is that
advertisers can contract with specific web sites for selling links.
Marketbanker has the facility for advertisers to search through its
list of web sites selling space.

Has worked fairly well for me even though the advertising tends to
be pretty general.

> I'd really love to hear your thoughts - not just on the fate of
> I-Sales [and the other I-Lists], but on the bigger picture here.
        - Adam, LED 1821

I stopped (some of) my I- subscriptions when I was sent a mail
explaining what they were doing, and offering me the chance to
unsubscribe. It was at a time when I was swamped with work, and
whilst I wouldn't have looked to unsubscribe, when it was handed to
me on a plate, I took it.

Even though something is being given away, it still needs to be
pushed. Certainly, there is an unsubscribe link on every mail
(directly or indirectly through account management) but that is
different to inviting your users to unsubscribe!

I am sure that this was not the only reason for certain
I-publications to cease, but Veronica Yuill points out that there
was a *catastrophic drop* in participation (so I assume also in
subscribers). Maybe this was in part because of the open door we
were given.

Veronica and Adam have also mentioned format -- HTML based e-Mails.
I know some of my clients strip all HTML out of e-Mails (I think
this is extreme, and just some HTML should be stripped -- but this
is a whole new can of worms (or should that be can of spam?)). I
also know that a lot of anti-spam software increases the spam
likelihood of an e-Mail if it is HTML based.

I know that I like my e-Mails to be text only. Although that may
just be me being old fashioned! But simple text reduces many
problems across different mail clients and operating systems. I am
currently mortified by the fact that my e-Mail programs has been
engulfed by Microsoft Word, so that the mails I send out are of the
type I hate to receive!

Rather than dwell on the down side to this, I think we should look
for positive features. Some of the I-ers may not have been
subscribers to the LED - maybe that will change, to the advantage of
everyone (except, admittedly, Marketing VOX and the I- Modorators).

Whilst LED doesn't appear to be lacking in any way, it never hurts
to have more input and more opinions!

There ain't no trick about it.  You and your dad maintain(ed) a high
signal-to-noise ratio.  It's "all meat, all day" (sorry to vegans in
the group, it's just an analogy!).  :-)

There's content... and then there's the voice that delivers the
content.  The "stuff between the lines" that can't be faked and
that's as hard to catch as a warm summer breeze in Montreal (OK, I'm
complaining about our weather again!).

I loved i-sales and was a huge fan of your dad's (still am wherever
he is and whatever he's doing).  This list carries on that tradition
with the same style, substance, and sincerity.

All the best,

Ken Evoy

I think the rise of spam, and the tools to fight it, has also
contributed to declining participation in email newslists.  That,
and the rise of email viruses have turned millions of people off to
simply reading their email.

I think the recent news of efforts to make every email trackable and
their senders accountable, is a huge step in the right direction,
and may bring back the confidence and participation in email
newslists in the future.

Aloha...

I take a bit of a different view with regard to the demise of
I-Sales... or any other discussion list.

In my view, discussion lists are driven by the personality of the
moderator.  In the case of I-Sales, it began the long road to
oblivion when John Audette ceased to be its moderator.

John's drive, intellect, ethics, and insights drove I-Sales.  His
savvy questions and answers forced the rest of us to post only when
we felt we could truly add substance to a discussion.  Consequently,
the level of advice and commentary on I-Sales was as high as you
will find anywhere.  John approach was that of a consummate
professional, and he drew other top quality people into what proved
to be a unique community.

When John decided to move on, he left a gapping hole which, frankly,
could not be filled by others... no matter how experienced or
talented.

Fortunately for us... his son did not fall far from the tree.  It is
his natural talent and personality which drive LED and, for that
reason alone, I expect to see this list continue to enjoy a long
life.

Aloha, John... wherever you are.

> Why would anyone want their images to be

        - Kathy Wilson Anderson, LED 1822

Kathy Wilson Anderson asks a great question: Why would anyone want
their images to be indexed by a search engine?  My original post of
this question was basically asking this question.

Since Google added image search, I've read some discussion of this.
I never quite understood the purpose of it, but several people have
indicated that it was important.

Why?

Kathy explains the down-side; can anyone offer an up-side?  And if
there is one, how does one get images indexed and ranked?

Hello everyone,

Can anyone tell me how long it takes 301 redirects to have an effect
on a sites search engine listing?

Thanks in advance for your help,
