LED Digest email discussion list

The email discussion list format, which the LED Digest has perfected over the last 10 years, represents an example of an "embedded network" that is a new subject of study by university programs. A discussion list is just one example of such a network, of course, and has its own unique characteristics compared to other systems of networked communication. As the Web evolves and these collaborative technologies are investigated further, community resources are constantly being reinvented. University business and marketing programs are studying these developments and use the LED Digest for its practical, informed business and marketing information as well as an example of a thriving niche embedded network.

S.L. Roberts of the University of Texas at Arlington explains...

"We are just now entering our second decade of GUI Web, and are discovering a wave of innovations taking that medium beyond the boxy monitor tied by umbilical cords to the eletronic body that grasps, translates and stores that vast digital world.

"I have been a member of the LED Digest since time began, and its quality is a prime consideration as to why it is still around when many others are not. As a university instructor in business management and entrepreneurship, I send my students to this list as an information source for assignments (as I do with Danny Sullivan's [former] SearchEngineWatch, another in the same elite category with you -- plugging away since us "oldtimers" started messing around with our new Internet toy).

"In management we study organizations, and we study strategy. For an organization, this list exhibits a form just now being studied in depth, called an imbedded network -- where a multilevel entity, organized by strengths of ties, cost-effective reciprocity in informal, but product-related, relationships, and open or closed connection nodes provides a type of interactive support without which sustainable exchange could not be effectively performed. (Uzzi, 1997; Burt, 1997; Coleman, 1988; Adler and Kwon, 2002; Greiner, 1972; Rao, Davis and Ward, 2000, etc.)

"Yes, the list takes time. Just as grading final exams is taking time (three days and counting), so my students (and I) have feedback on the content through which they have been guided in a short 3 months. But my job is not to save up for that mythical yacht, it is to help them shape their minds and hearts so that when they leave my tutelage, they have tools to use for decision-making, building businesses, and fulfilling their human potential.

"It is your priviledge to contribute to the many of us who continue to believe that the web is still touchable for individuals and small businesses, and that others are still out there, friends and fellow innovators, and it is our priviledge to see that familiar address in the inbox and make use of its gems.

"Let me send you my deepest thanks for an exempliary column, track record, and my hope that the talented readers of the column will help you just as you have allowed us to help each other. Thanks!"

SL Roberts, Dept. of Management
University of Texas at Arlington

It is fascinating to study the LED Digest as an evolving communications network, but its primary benefit is as a practical resource. There have been thousands of posts written to the LED Digest on hundreds of topics related to Internet marketing and business. The authors of these posts consist of Internet entrepreneurs, business management, programmers, search engine optimizers, copywriters, CEOs, service providers, Web designers, small businesses, academics, students, and many more. This diverse and informed collection of subscribers produces a wealth of insightful, useful discussions. For this reason, many universities across the country are using the LED Digest archives as a resource for their program courses; a resource that is living, growing, and constantly expanding.

A growing list of universities and colleges are acknowledging the research value of the LED Digest, including:
