From: Helen Estlin
Subject: Atomz site search

For the past five years Atomz has provided free site search. Many
web designers and individuals have taken advantage of this service.
In mid September Atomz announced that, effective September 30th,
certain enhancements would be made to the Express Search programme.
They also announced that search results would include advertising.
Sure enough, paid advertising has now begun to appear in site search
results.

The problem is that we have encountered competitor ads appearing on
our clients' site searches. Were our clients to discover this on
their own, we would find ourselves with more than the proverbial egg
on our face.

While we understand their need to reassess their situation in
providing what must have been a costly pro bono programme over this
five year period, we don't feel that this was the best way of going
about dealing with the matter.

We have been in contact with Atomz and it seems that their sales
department has been buried in questions and complaints, as you might
expect. They advised us that they have suddenly implemented a thirty
day grace period, ending October 31st. In their words

-------------------
"... there is an option available in your search account (on the
Update Account page in the Account menu) that will allow you to
prevent the ads from appearing in your search results for a short
time. Look for a checkbox labelled "Delay Start of Advertisements"
and it will give you until November 1 before the ads will show up
again."
-------------------

They further advised us as follows:

-------------------
"We understand that displaying ads is not right for all sites.
During this transition period to the new advertising, we are
offering an option to remove the sponsored advertising at the cost
of $250 per year per account. This offer will expire by October 31,
2004."
-------------------

Does anyone know of any other free site search that they have been
using that would perform the same functions that Atomz used to?

Helen Estlin

Subject: Anti-virus

Well all I have to say about Symantec products with all respect.
Years ago when I still worked with Windows 98 and tried to remove
software from them it started behaving like a virus.

Software was removed but then still I got startups as if these
programs from Symantec still where running but they were removed.

It took me quite a while to remove their registry entries and
pictures (considered spam). Also a complaint what I see with users
these days from their products is that systems are really getting
slow !!!

So that is why I decided already long time ago to stop using
software from them. By the way I discover there are more and more
free products on the market (example already given AVG) which are
working better and less memory eating than products from example big
companies like Symantec.

I think companies like Symantec want too much and cause more
unexpected errors and trouble with all their extras.

It is a hype these days for companies to integrate as much as
possible and in the end they will lose because their main goal is
lost in all the new extras they give you. And so these products
become more and more just a toy for a short period whereafter you
decide to never use their products anymore.

The best for companies like them is to stick with the things they do
good, but for now I don't use their products anymore. More and more
I go for the alternatives.

Friendly regards

Martin Kersten

Subject: Anti-virus

I've been using McAfee Viruscan Online for years. I found Norton to
be annoying when I first bought the program years ago and never
looked back after going with McAfee. It handles viruses exactly as
you request, by deleting them and then notifying me of the deletion.

One time McAfee quarantined a virus and asked  what to do about it,
but that was years ago. I like the automatic update services (they
ask first). My antivirus is never out of date because I got lazy and
didn't update.

Personally, I use McAfee Online.  I have used McAfee for many years
and have always found it works well and is constantly kept up to
date.  It can be set to do updates automatically whenever an update
becomes available, or to notify you and let you do the update on
your schedule (my choice, since the ocassional update requires a
restart of your computer and I need to ensure that I am not doing
something critical when this is needed).

With regard to email, when it finds a virus in one (usually in an
attachment), it does not delete the email but it does clean the
virus then adds an attachment to let me know what it has done.
Makes it easy to spot these virus containing messages so I can just
delete them.

Added bonus - McAfee checks sent email to ensure an outgoing message
does not contain a virus (safety net in case a virus / trojan does
take over you machine - prevents you from unintentionally infecting
others).  It will also watch the "Subject" used in outgoing emails
and warn if multiple messages are being sent with the same subject -
again this is in case your machine has been taken over and is being
used to send spam without your knowledge.

It also checks attachments sent via instant messages, catches Web
sites that attempt to do bad things (load a virus, contain a "no
close" script, etc.) as well as the usual checking of downloads,
etc. and the routine scanning of your system.

I know a lot of people disregard this comment right out of hand but
maybe consider buying a Macintosh.

Think of the value of this peace of mind - I'm 35, have been using
computers at home since around 1985, and never had one single virus.
Never had Anti-Virus software on my Mac, don't need it.

Subject: Outlook & Act

I bought a copy of ACT as it is advertised to be completely
integrated with Outlook - however, it can be a real pain if I want
to merge more than 3 emails and then send by Outlook...

ACT admits there is a problem in their notes...

Nobody seems to have a solution to the problem... I have searched
the internet but perhaps there is someone out there that may be able
to solve it...
