Hannu H Karri, a University Professor in Finland, predicts that the Internet is going down in the year of 2006 if nothing happens as regards to spam & viruses. Another article http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp... speaks about users that abandons the net after their computers have been hi-jacked by spyware. What can we do to fight virus, spam & spyware on a global scale? Best regards, Lennart Svanberg, Executive Producer IMC Gothenburg 2004 - November 29-30th http://www.internetmarketingconference.com ------- new post - new topic ------- From: Kathryn Martyn Subject: New Topic: WAP Adam said, "maybe it's a good time for new topics" and I think that's an excellent idea. How about a word or two on WAP, the Wireless Access Protocol? A basic WAP page is easy enough to post, so my question: Do users of cell phones want more applications for their phones, or would they want to see daily, updated tips, hints, etc. type services, such as I could offer by way of the "Weight Loss Tip-o-the-Day" for instance. My husband's site, http://www.daytradersbulletin.com could also send via WAP the Pre-opening Commentary for the S&P which we currently post in a blog and via an e-mail list. I have come across some pretty fun "apps" but I'm thinking more along the lines of something a regular Joe could post. Any ideas on this? Anyone who's already doing something with WAP? I'd love to hear about it. Kathryn Martyn, M.NLP Using Your Brain for a Change in Your Weight http://www.onemorebite-weightloss.com ===== CONTINUING ================================= From: Richard Graham Subject: Mac or PC It's nice to have a civilised discussion about Macs vs. PCs! I just bought a new laptop and was really considering a Mac. The reason is that as the PC has more choice, there doesn't seem to be a "standard" as such, but on the Mac if you do video it's "Final Cut", for music it's "Logic". This appeals to me as it is easier to move projects from place to place. It's a bit like the iPod, where if you use it for what it's intended to it's as smooth as anything, but if you have more off center needs then it can be a bit fiddly. In my experience the modern Macs do crash as often as the modern PCs do. And I bought a PC laptop last week because a 2Ghz Pentium M is simply faster for the work I do than a Mac G4 laptop. But if the new G5 laptop came out next year then I think I will upgrade to that, the peace of mind of not worrying about Windows updates, security etc. probably is worth it. Just my thoughts, Be genki, Richard Graham http://www.genkijapan.net ------- new post - same topic ------- From: Sarah Hayes Subject: Macs, PCs and Anti-virus If you don't have antivirus software installed on a Mac you don't necessarily know if you're infected. The first and only time I ever got infected by a virus was back in 1998 and it came from a design studio that only used Macs. Because of their belief that it's only the lowly PCs that have a problem with viruses they still don't have any antivirus software on their Macs even now! Until last year I used Norton Antivirus and Firewall, but it caused big problems with the wireless network and in the end I changed to McAfee. I also have antivirus software on my mail server, so I don't have too many viruses for McAfee to deal with. Lately I seem to have more of a problem with viruses on web pages. I'm not sure if they are real viruses or just virus like activity, but McAfee seems to have problems deleting them. Sarah Hayes ------- new post - same topic -------- From: Dirk van der Werff Subject: Macs, PCs and Anti-virus Sorry to all those PC people out there ..... I run 4 Macs from laptops to high end number crunchers and there's an older iMac in my kids room too. I have never had anti-virus, they run a simple built in firewall... we're on broadband and I too NEVER have had any viruses, macros or worms cause a problem I get hundreds actually as my e-mail address has been out there for more than 9 years, but the Mac looks at the ones that get through my rules for e-mail and nothing happens anyway ... even if I open one or two e-mails with all sorts of installers and attachments, nothing happens, nothing. I run all the normal Word, Excel and Powerpoint programs, use Php, MySQL through the BUILT IN Apache server in Mac OSX, easily browse and interact with PC systems and files ....... .. and PC users don't take the leap because they have to shell out another $200 - $300 extra dollars? Crazy. . in fact the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times have compared prices of the new all-in-one G5 iMacs and said they are actually CHEAPER by $200.00 than the equivelent Dell. (http://www.apple.com/imac/) Go figure - people are soooo narrow minded that they can't see the bigger picture. Is there a product, strategy, or SEO > company out there that I could recommend for this client? - Beth M. Durkee, LED 1882 Hi Beth- Our firm specializes in SEO, so my post is a little biased. Here are some general guidelines for your client to remember: (1) There are no guarantees for placement with SEO. I know that many SEO firms like to have this guarantee as a sales pitch, but it's still not a valid one. No SEO has control over positioning - the search engines do. Make sure your client doesn't fall for this "snake oil" sales pitch. (2) With SEO, the following things will have impact: copywriting, design and site architecture, and link development. If your client's site does not have these 3 elements in their current site, the site will have to change. If your client does not want to change his/her site, then forget SEO. Search engine advertising (PPC ads) are the best choice. Again, watch out for the "snake oil" pitch of "you don't have to change your site." Those are just search engine spammers who use cloaking as a means to deceive the search engines. (3) With SEO, turnaround time is not immediate. If the site is relatively simple, it is reasonable to begin seeing qualified traffic within a month. 3 months is more reasonable to get the full impact. (4) There is no such thing as "fast" link development. If an SEO says that they can get a site link popularity really fast? "Snake oil" lingo for link farms. The fastest way to get high-quality link development is through directory submission. Paid submission gets the fastest turnaround time. Remember, paying the directory does not guarantee that a site will be listed. It just pays for the time it takes an editor to review the site, and then "yay" or "nay" it. Directory submission is not something anyone should rush into because it is very, very difficult to modify a directory listing once its accepted. (5) When you say product, I always think of the shopping search engines. Froogle is free, for the time being. And there are many others. Search Engine Watch (searchenginewatch.com) has a number of articles on how to get listed in the shopping search engines. Shopping search pages often end up as top 10 listings in Google and Yahoo. http://searchenginewatch.com/searchday/article.php/3413551 http://searchenginewatch.com/searchday/article.php/2214421 http://searchenginewatch.com/links/article.php/2156331 I interviewed Froogle founder Craig Nevill-Manning a few months ago. He gives great tips for his search engine: http://www.clickz.com/experts/search/results/article.php/3357271 http://www.clickz.com/experts/search/results/article.php/3363721 Don't forget, too, a ranking does not guarantee sales. People will often research before they buy. And if the site isn't user friendly? Then the search engine positions won't matter. Submit It is a good program and reasonably priced. I also don't think your client should discount PPC advertising. During design and development, and during the initial SEO promotion, it's a great way of gathering data and getting some initial traffic. Your client can always phase it out once SEO is in full effect. I'm transitioning my sites as a result, too, and I just found Site Search from Bravenet: http://www.bravenet.com/webtools/search2/index.php Any other recommendations or thoughts on the Bravenet Site Search tool? The site uses osCommerce... > What is going on? Should I block their whole range of IP > addresses? - Sarah Hayes, LED 1882 On our site we have the option to block the whole range 65.54.188.1 - 65.54.188.255 to our site. This is a double edged sword usually you want search engines to crawl you but sometimes not all day for weeks with 5 connections a minute. We also get times when Google and others are crawling as well and bring the site to a halt. You can block at two levels - at the router (you may not have control over this) or at the server. We block at the server so that it can easily be switched on and off as we wish - ie we let them crawl between 11pm and 8am - though this can be done at the router as well. I would suggest that you could easily stop MSN crawling by using your robots.txt file see http://www.robotstxt.org/wc/exclusion.html AND putting this line into the header of your html pages. <.META NAME="robots" CONTENT="noindex, nofollow"> For more on this from MSN see http://search.msn.com/webmasters/msnbot.aspx Best wishes Rupert Dick http://www.ukvillages.co.uk ------------------------------------------------------- The LED Digest is sponsored by pair Networks: pair.com for Hosting | pairNIC.com for Domains Copyright 1995-2004 Adam Audette.
