It occurs to me that many people send orders on workstations that have keyloggers installed by their bosses (quite legally!). Even when using a secure site, the keystrokes will still be logged and are accessible. Of course, there can also be keyloggers 'installed' along with spyware. The implications of this are quite frightening! My solution has been to offer our customers the choice of putting their credit card numbers in via a series of buttons and a script that I wrote, so there are no keystrokes for the card number. The expiry date also has drop-down boxes, so again - no keystrokes. Am I being paranoid, or is there are real problem here? Roy Williams Nervous Records www.nervous.co.uk ===== CONTINUING ================================= From: Roland Matzke Subject: Reading digital > Newspapers... know it's faster and easier to scan down > a narrow column than to toil along long lines of text. I'm > a great e-book reader. I find the narrow format of a handheld > screen ideal for reading whodunnits... - Valerie Beeby, LED 1889 Dear Kathryn, If you want to try a new and effective format for e-books, try MAGView from Offline Digital (www.offlinedigital.com). It's dynamic in layout, can print with or without images and the reader is a measly 340k to download and is not a Windows dependent plug-in (no grief with having to update to the latest version all the time). Have been using it for 2 years now to format brochures, catalogues, handbooks, etc. Plus the file compression is fantastic, which makes e-mailing large docs practical. Doesn't work on Apple at this stage, but that's a minor problem. PDF simply isn't an option any more and wasn't even designed for e-books in any case, but for the lack of anything else, people used PDF. And no , there aren't a lot of formats to choose from. What is the cheapest model I could > buy that will run most popular Mac browsers? - Abu Haider, LED 1888 An eMac is $800. That's the cheapest. It comes as an "all-in-one" so it has a monitor. Safari and IE5.2.3 comes with the Mac. You should also download FireFox from mozilla.org to test with, and maybe Netscape 7. Look at apple.com for other options. You could buy something used online but you want to make sure it's fast enough to run OSX, so therefore I wouldn't actually suggest you buy a used one. You may be able to find some rebuilt ones that are new enough to run OSX comfortably. John Barrick http://www.waycoolwebdesign.com ==== BILLBOARD =================================== From: Andreas Huttenrauch Subject: Script IDE's with version control Hello Fellow LED'ers, I've spent some time on Google looking for a specific piece of software, however am not quite finding what I'm looking for. Does anyone here by chance know of an IDE for HTML / PHP / ASP / CSS / etc with built in FTP and built in version control? I'm starting to think this doesn't exist. As a concept this is simple though. The editor simply saves previous versions before uploading a new version - not much too it. With SSH commands, the IDE could even lock down a directory while someone is working on it. Any ideas? Andreas Huttenrauch http://www.globi.ca ------- new post - new topic ------- From: Tom Aman Subject: Window sizes > I can't offer much in the way of text size because text > size is easily adjusted by the visitors in their browser. - A Brantley, LED 1889 > Not if the text size is controlled by CSS. - Steve Pronger, LED 1890 Except that, even with CSS, the actual display size of the text can be affected by the monitor's physical size and the user's display resolution settings. Be VERY careful about using small text sizes because some users set what most would consider too high a resolution for the physical size of their screen. This effectively gives the user more screen real estate but it can make small text unreadable.
