I guess I wasn't minding the easy three day schedule too much, because I pretty much forgot it was only a temporary schedule and not the norm. Which brings me to the reason I'm interrupting your LED today... what do you think of the schedule change? Are you missing the more frequent five day schedule, or is it more valuable to have the LED on Tuesday through Thursday? I value your input, and in true "open source" fashion (which is befitting of the LED) am leaving the decision up to you. Let me know your thoughts and I'll tally the total and we'll have a plan. Have a great week, Adam -------------------------- From: Kevin Houston Subject: New topic - Reputable third party SMTP servers I am looking for a reputable 3rd party SMTP mailserver hosting company. The site I program for (not my own) sends out a lot of emails on behalf of musical bands and their agents. The emails (and some email-to-fax) are sent to various media contacts within our database. Also we are looking to provide the bands with the tools to publish their own newletter for fans. We don't want to send them offsite, so we need to use the server directly. We are looking for a mailserver (SMTP) that will allow us to make the messages look like they were sent from the bands directly (i.e. modify the from field.) I know that sounds like exactly what spammer does. Is there any way not to get lumped together with companies that frequent the real-time blackhole list? Anyone know of a good, reputable, third party mailserver? Anyone know of bad, spamming, sleazebags to avoid? Our current web hosting company does not allow us to modify the from field. They insist that we send out all email with a valid email address from within our domain. The situation of keyloggers or any other means to steal credit card numbers or other details is very frightening and very real. What you've created will probably be the wave of the future. Of course, there's always the possibility that people ought not be doing personal shopping on business time, but that's another thread. I can't help but notice your URL, http://www.nervous.co.uk and your company, Nervous Records. On the other hand, maybe you are paranoid! LOL Kathryn Martyn, M.NLP Ending Emotional Eating, One Bite at a Time http://www.onemorebite-weightloss.com ------- new post - new topic ------- From: Mary Lee Subject: Mac testing > I am a web designer and I would like to test my sites > on Mac browsers... What is the cheapest model I could > buy that will run most popular Mac browsers? - Abu Haider, LED 1888 I have bought 2 of my Macs from ebay and they are both very strong computers. Any of the macs put out in the last few years will run OSX. I bought a 350 mhz iBook laptop for $350 & it runs OSX, Office & more with plenty of room left over. I bought a 450 mhz iMac for $400 last year & it is a fantastic computer. Again with OSX, Office, Photoshop, GoLive, Safari etc... Never had either one of them freeze up either. So you do not have to go buy a new computer for testing, but you might find yourself addicted to the macs & never go back to a PC:-) A couple suggestions. First I always add RAM memory to a used computer unless it comes stocked. This does make it run faster & programs execute better. iBooks & iMacs are VERY simple to add RAM to. Just open and insert. Again I buy it on ebay cheaply. If you do buy on ebay be sure to look at a sellers feedback rating before buying. Also look at their return policy. If they have a low rating or very few sales then pass on buying a high end item like a computer. If they state AS IS again pass. Just some safe buyer tips. Mary Lee Dinner and a Murder Mystery Games http://www.dinnerandamurder.com ------- new post - same topic ------- From: Abu Haider Subject: Mac Testing I would like to thank everyone who responded to my question about testing on Mac platform. I now have a pretty good idea about what are my options. While I make my decision on this, let me extend this topic a little more. How about testing on the older versions of PC browsers? I was able to find links to older Netscape versions, but the links didn't work. Even if I get the older version, they won't coexist with the latest version of the same breed of browser, in most cases. It will also be difficult to obtain a version 5.x IE once the system is updated to 6.0. I am thinking we have to run a virtual machine (VMWare or MS Virtual PC) to have different versions of the same browser. Is there a better alternative to this method? Thanks again to everyone. You have been very helpful. Abu Haider ==== BILLBOARD =================================== From: Tom Arriola Subject: Script IDE's with version control > Does anyone know of an IDE for HTML / PHP / ASP / CSS / etc > with built in FTP and built in version control? I'm starting to think > this doesn't exist. - Andreas Huttenrauch, LED 1891 Try Macromedia's Contribute. It does what you want. It's for groups of people who share duties editing files for websites. An excerpt from their site: ---------------------- "Contribute 3 includes new support for CSS-P, WebDAV connections, advanced administrative controls, content approvals, and lightning-fast performance." ---------------------- Learn more here: http://www.macromedia.com/software/contribute/productinfo/features/ Tom Arriola Crime Scene http://www.crimescene.com ------- new post - same topic ------- From: Shabeer Ali Subject: Version control IDE Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 - http://www.adobe.com/products/dreamweaver Do not forget to check out this presentation that gives you a brief overview of its powerful features http://www.adobe.com/products/dreamweaver/productinfo/features (Note: Requires flash player 7. Helps to switch on your speaker too.) It does have a slight bit of learning curve but once your past that, its a real breeze. Best, Shabeer Ali ------- new post - same topic ------- From: Richard Dudley Subject: Version control IDE I don't know of one currently that comes out of the box as such, but you can piece one together from a couple of sources. One of the problems with source control options is that they are usually designed to be hosted on their own servers, so you'll typically find support for source control in your IDEs, but not actual source control options. www.tigris.org has a pretty good collection of source control options for different IDEs and platforms, some of which can be run locally (i.e., doesn't need an additional server). The first IDE is Microsoft's Visual Studio. There are add-ins available for PHP, CVS / SubVersion source control, and FTP deployment of sites. This is an expensive option. Another IDE is the Eclipse Project (www.eclipse.org). Ecplipse is open source, and is a basic interface which is extended by a large assortmentof plug-ins and modules. One good site is www.eclipseplugincentral.com. Some versions of Visual Studio 2005, currently in beta, will ship with its Visual Studio Team System, which is a CVS-like source control system. Another editor I sometimes use is Code Chameleon (http://www.c-point.com/chameleon.htm). This does have integrated FTP, and can be part of the Creative Suite, which includes some other editors you might find useful. One that I haven't used, but has FTP and source control plug-ins is the open source jEdit. Good luck!
