Greetings LEDer,

I'm proud to announce the first ebook in the LED Digest Bookstore:

"Start Your Own Home-Based Website Design Business" by Mark Frank.

First, Mark is a long-time LEDer and contributes consistently
quality posts. Second, this ebook has really useful information. It
covers all aspects of the design biz game, from how to find the
right clients to targeting your business to a market niche.

There are 19 chapters of information spanning almost 200 pages.

The Appendix, though, may be one of the most valuable parts of the
book. Mark offers a selection of business forms and contracts, from
design proposals to sub-contract agreements. Really good stuff.

I've gotten the list a 10% discount. The book is $44.95.

Check it out: http://led-digest.websitedesignbiz.com

Best wishes,
Adam

PS: I'd love to get your feedback about this - both the ebook itself
and the idea behind it.

Adam,

I've been opposed to link buying for a couple of years, ever since I
contacted a well known broker and asked a few questions. They had to
do with IP ranges and variety in placement sources, as well as
result tracking of customer ranking improvements. I was blown off
with "I don't have time for that! Everyone knows this works to
increase PageRank!"

The providers simply don't care how your links look to the
Algorithms. They are providing a service which is in demand and
consequences be damned. My personal take on it is don't risk your
reputation or your rankings on a short term high sold by PageRank
pushers. You'll become addicted and the rankings crash can be nasty
with serious withdrawal symptoms.

Besides, you've just put the world on notice that you are
considering it and made it public here. I recommend against it.

Whoa there Mike. I haven't put the "world on notice" that I'm
considering buying links! Don't know how you jumped to that
conclusion. It sounds very dramatic though. :-)

What I've actually done is tried to start a discussion.

Please remember: this is a discussion list, and I'm the moderator.
My job here is to start discussions.

Personally I have no intention of buying links, because I don't need
to buy links. But I'd love to hear from those who have experience
with the process. Not for my own consideration, Mike, but for the
discussions it might produce.

One attribute of this list is that it tends to produce higher
quality posts than most any other forum I've been to. The format
lends itself to quality. It's a slower response rate, it's very
public, it's formalized (a name is even required - no tag names -
imagine that!). These are things that help make posts more editorial
and thoughtful than your typical blog, forum, etc.

So bringing up the link buying question gives us an opportunity here
to explore that topic on the LED. As far as I'm aware, we haven't
had many discussions about it. I've found a few from years past but
nothing current.

So link buyers - you can post anonymously if you want - what's your
take?

I'm going to stick my head out there and say that it's not so black
and white that buying links is "bad." It also might be pretty risky.
I think I remember the O'Reilly network getting burned by Google
because of purchased links...? I'm sure it can be effective, which
is why Text Link Ads (for one easy example) has been so successful
(and was recently bought out).

Experiences, thoughtful posts, rants, flames, all are welcome.

Cheers,
Adam

I agree.  The 1st party paid for your time and the work was
developed on their dime.

A "non-compete" agreement might very well tie the noose around your
neck.  It is an agreement not to compete.  If you developed
essentially the same info for the 1st party's competor, the courts
might decided that you legally have competed with them.  Better read
it closely before you depend on it to save the day.

On the other hand, non-compete agreements usually have a time limit
in the agreement.  Standard used to be 5 years.  Again, check your
agreement, then you probably better talk to your lawyer.

Subject: Sued over SEO

Dear Name Withheld,

My advice would be to spend half hour with your lawyer and pay the
small fee for the half hour of advice. She will be able to advise
you far more accurately, probably, than most of us out here. At
least it gives her fair warning that you may be coming back with it
at some point and gives her the opportunity to do her own research.

But most of all, it will likely put your mind at rest that this
person has no hold over you, unless of course, they've paid you a
retainer for the last 4 years which had an exclusivity clause. If
you are an independent contractor, that's what you are, which means
you can work for whoever you want to.  If that's not the case,
surely you're an employee and they will be responsible for your
national insurance and taxes, things like that.

Get some proper legal advice.  That's my advice anyway.

Good luck

A designer creates an ensemble for a movie star 4 years ago for a
special event and says, based on the panotone color shart, glamour,
vogue, etc. these are the trends that most stars are following in
order to get picked as a fashion icon rather than a "fashion don't"
in most magazines, trade journals, etc.

The actor / actress claims 4 years down the road, this outfit is
getting me laughed off the red carpet, I'll sue!!

You are an SEO, you know that the engines are fickle and that tastes
change over time. SEO is a constant battle. Unless you signed on for
constantly updating their site, maintaining something to keep the
rankings up.. they should be thanking you that your old work has
lasted so long!

Why not ask AdSense? They're approachable, and it's a legitimate
question.

Hi Tom,

Is getting the money to your account, and then transferring it to
his account a problem with you?

You can add his websites to your own account and see how much he
earns by setting up "channels" while inserting the code. In fact if
they are different domains, I don't think you need to change the
code at all.

Sincerely,

> Does anyone know a good website editor?
        - Mary Findley, LED Digest 2284
        - http://www.led-digest.com/content/view/1326/55/

Hello Mary, and G'Day Folks,

DerekWare HTML Author 3.0 - Simple yet packs a lot of punch!

For years I have been using this HTML Editor - "DerekWare HTML
Author 3.0 by Derek Smith - Public beta version" in all versions of
Windows from Win 95 up to 2003 and have incorporated it into most
FTP programs I have used over the years. And as Derek Smith tells
why he wrote it, (back in the good old days):

--------------------
"So you're asking yourself, "What do I need with *another* web
authoring tool?  What could this one possibly provide me that I
don't already have?"  Well, I find myself asking that same question.
However, no matter what application I used to create web pages,
none of them seemed to offer everything I wanted. That's why I wrote
DerekWare HTML Author."
--------------------

Features

(seems a bit funny now when you think about it and the fact that it
still works in 2006)

- Fully 32-bit Windows 95 application

- Supports all HTML 2.0 tags and Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0
extensions.

- Intelligent tag formatting, allowing the user to select the text
to be formatted and click a button.

- Tag Wizards for the more complicated tags, including font changes,
extended horizontal rules, images, dynamic images, links, marquees
and forms.

- A customizable tag list, allowing the user to add, remove and
modify user-defined tags.

Licensing

DerekWare HTML Author 3.0 is being released as freeware to the
general public. The program may be freely distributed, so long as
none of it's contents are modified in any way.  Corporate use is
hereby forbidden without written consent from the author. (if you
can find him!)

There are many sites that still have it available for download (some
attempt to incorporate it or claim it as their own, so take care and
make sure it's genuine)

To make it easy for you all, here is the download link from my web
site in a zip file, with full instructions and how to expand all
menus and options to make it a very handy HTML editor.
www.pcbugfixer.com/temp/DerekHTML.zip

Have fun using it, and if you can still find Derek Smith (I did 2
years ago) let me know where he is please.

Subject: Faster site

> look at my website and advise me how to make it load faster.
        - Val Waldeck, LED Digest 2286
        - http://www.led-digest.com/content/view/1342/55/

Actually, I wish more sites loaded as quickly as Val's.  Except for
graphics, on a 44Kbps dialup, the average load time for each page
seems to run at about 4 seconds.  This makes the site very useable
for dialup users because the page content is available very quickly,
if interested, the surfer can wait for any graphics to load.  The
only realy delay is waiting for the images for the menu to load when
the first page is accessed, even that ceases to be a problem on
subsequent pages.

If Val follows some of the other suggestions being made by LEDers,
it should be possible to reduce the load times further.  Aside from
those suggestions, images would also load faster if they were run
through an image optimizer to reduce their size, and elimination of
the animated GIF images would further speed things up.
