A month ago I began an informal research on this mail list; I began with the question "I wonder who's out there?" and I began taking a few minutes each day, as I read the Digest, to visit the websites of the participants. I kept a file with each web addresses and a brief description, often the tagline clipped straight from the site. About the same time, I sent MY newsletter subscribers a survey, simply trying to identify (again) "who's out there?" One question asked "what type of business are you engaged in?" and offered a list (major SIC categories) to choose from. At least half the respondents failed to find an appropriate descriptor in my list, and so chose "Other". So I went looking for a better list of categories. (I am currently using the NAICS classification system, first 2 digits mostly.) Just now I took my list of "bCentral Digest" (LED Digest) participants and tried matching it to my new list of business categories. Better -- only 8 fell to "other" out of 85 entries. I thought you might be interested to see the breakdown I came up with. What a broad and healthy business scene it indicates!
