I'm going to push this one a bit in that next time I get spam from Purina about their dog food, I'm going to go down Gordon's route with their UK subsidiary. They may not be responsible for the spam, but on the other hand they don't want to upset my two basset hounds, who do eat some of their products. James Miller Daisy Analysis www.daisy.co.uk -------- new post - new topic --------- From: Tom Aman Subject: Hosting question I know most LEDers who have their sites hosted probably have their own favorite hosting company. I was wondering if any of you have had any experience or know anything about the quality of hosting provided by 1 & 1 Internet, Inc (see www.1and1.com . I ran across their ad in PC World and, while I am happy with my hosting company, I would also love to save money with the low rates being offered by 1 & 1 but would hate to change and find their hosting is sub-par. Tom Aman Aman Software http://www.cyberspyder.com ======== CONTINUING =============================== From: Carol Moore Subject: Generating additional content can be worthwhile Fabricating Content for SEO (previous post) Have been following the above topic with interest. We provide career advice services in Dublin Ireland. (See www.quovadis.ie) Our web site is brochure only. Because it's high end personal services we find our clients mention us to other people, who then check out our web site before ringing us. We know from other advertising media we don't tend to get cold calls so we need to increase general awareness of our company. In order to minimise our new web site update costs and improve SEO our web site designer Steve Pronger www.stevepronger.com suggested we use a blog which we host on the web site. So we set up two separate blogs using www.blogger.com which is free. One covered events of interest to people changing jobs or thinking of further education http://quovadis.ie/upcoming-events-blog.htm The other is a commentary on work and life skills. http://quovadis.ie/opinions-blog.htm which hopefully demonstrates our expertise in this area. Both blogs have an "about us" http://www.quovadis.ie/aboutus.htm section which links to the main web site. Both blogs are very relevant to our business of career advice and career guidance. Steve advised us to use technorati tags and we also registered with an Irish blog aggregator These blogs have generated significant extra visitors. For example a job fair (Opportunities 2007) was held which we mentioned on the web site. This has become the top incoming search term to date in March. Many visitors have signed up for RSS feeds which means we know we're on the right track. (Don't know the exact number as I don't want it appearing on the blog and have not figured out how to report otherwise yet!) Additionally we used relevant free resources such as http://EzineArticles.com which site visitors spend time looking at. Partly as a result of one client being impressed with the web site we got a spot on a radio show as expert commentators. So we feel developing additional site content has been very valuable. The key is to identify what are your key targets in the real world, and then see how time spent developing your web site can support this. Not the other way around. If you're interested in business blogging these free resources may be of interest. http://www.krishnade.com/blog/2007/business-blogging-podcast/ Carol Moore Quo Vadis Solutions http://www.quovadis.ie -------- new post - new topic --------- From: Nathan Holley Subject: Domain extensions > Would search engines discriminate > against a .biz? - Paul A Harris, LED Digest 2364 - http://www.led-digest.com/content/view/1765/55/ No, but your target audience might. The thing to remember about domains (and extensions) is that they're significant for potential customers and visitors, not for search engines. Having a my-dashed-fancy-domain.biz probably won't instill the same confidence as mydomain.org. Search engines don't care though. Nathan Holley ============ Sponsor Message =========== Why pay more for less? Some content providers charge extra to search-engine optimize copy. And some are so clueless, they don't offer SEO at all. A lot of good that'll do your site. At GetWebContent.com, we SEO everything we write without any additional charge whatsoever. Neilson Subject: Miva > I am wondering if there are any reasons we may not want > to go [with Miva Merchant 5]... are there limitations...? > We want to be sure this is the best solution for our > business before jumping in. - Gail Kearney, LED Digest 2363 - http://www.led-digest.com/content/view/1764/55/ I have been using Miva Merchant for about 5 years now. Earlier versions have had some glitches. My ISP has version 4 and not upgrade to 5 yet. They promised to upgrade last year but still waiting. I have been fairly happy with it. The only glitch I had was with paypal payments in version 4 but that was fixed with a $25 add on module by my ISP. I have a number of associates that also us Mive with stores in various parts of the USA and they all have been very satisfied. I know that Miva offers a variety of modules but I have not purchased any. I have checked a number of other shopping carts and have yet to find any that are reasonably priced that will do what Miva does and offer so many different modules at affordable prices. R. Neilson H. L. Supply www.hansons.net -------- new post - same topic -------- From: Robert Joy Subject: Miva Just my thought and experience, we have used Squirrel Cart with great success and the support is outstanding, it has everything you would need. Also I'd stay away from and run fast away from YourPay as far as processing goes, they are the worse possible. Robert Joy www.alegriawebdesign.com -------- new post - same topic -------- From: Lee Roberts Subject: Miva > Apple Pie is known for being very search engine friendly > and may be one of the best SEO solutions, but I'm not > sure how large it can scale. - Nathan Holley, LED Digest 2364 - http://www.led-digest.com/content/view/1765/55/ Nathan, thank you for the kind words. David Yancey's Web site, http://www.22gshop.com, will hit 100,000 SKU's by end of year. While Apple Pie Shopping Cart is suitable for all kinds of small businesses, a dedicated server can handle over 100,000 orders per day. If you have questions about the software, please contact me off-list. > ... serve up static duplicates of the shopping pages > to crawlers, and robots.txt the actual cart directory. > Keeps the spiders from indexing those pages... I've found that this is merely a work around to the real problem that many shopping cart simply can't produce proper URL rewrites to overcome the dynamic addresses. Even those that have thought they have can be broken so the dynamic URLs exist and then those dynamic URLs can be submitted to Google. That causes another problem of devaluation due to duplicate content. Regards, Lee Roberts -------- new post - new topic -------- From: Mary Lee Subject: Copied site > ... I don't think I've ever seen a > female web content thief... - Allan Gardyne, LED Digest 2364 You are very wrong there. It was a female that stole lots of content from my site & copied my complete murder mystery party game format to write her own less than stellar games. There is also no shaming this woman, she could care less. She ignores phone calls and emails. Fortunately for me you can't steal talent. Her games are really awful. Her theft has actually been very good for me and taught me a lesson. It has kept me on my toes and working to constantly improve my product and my site. Because of her my site is at the top of our niche and growing by leaps and bounds every year. I now take marketing and SEO seriously. I am always adding new and unique content. I am always thinking "What can I do, that would make you want to choose me over her?", "How can I make my site more useful to my customers?". It also appears that Google has penalized this thief for her copying, as she cannot be found in the organic search engine results, even after 2 years. By striving to give more to my customers and set myself apart from her, I have climbed to the top of the search engines.
