Greetings LEDer,

Today is one of the slowest days on the LED in ages. It's a great
time to take a breather here after so much activity for the past
several months.

It's Friday so many of us won't be working for a few days (unless
you're like me and work on weekends). With that in mind, I want to
leave you with a couple new discussion ideas.

1) CHANGE ONE THING

If you had the power to immediately change ONE THING (no matter how
big or small) about your job, what would it be? You don't have to be
the owner of a business to answer this question.

Here's my answer: I'd get an office outside the home. While the
virtual thing is cool and all, it comes with struggles and
tradeoffs. For one, I miss the social aspect -- chatting at work,
taking a break for games, whatever. It's also really hard with a 19
month old girl to create separation... but that's another story :-)

Read this recent article for tips on overcoming telecommuting
problems: http://www.alistapart.com/articles/longhallway

What about you? What do you need to change to improve your job, your
business, your position?

2) ESSENTIAL BIZ SOFTWARE

Now the fun one...

What are the essential programs you use every day for work?

Comment?

I'll start this off. I'm still on Windows, even though my heart
yearns for OSX and my wallet for Ubuntu. Actually what's keeping me
from changing my laptop is simply the thought of spending several
days getting all my stuff set up and working properly. Not as much
of an issue on a Mac, although they'll definitely be some transition
time.

On Windows, here's what I use daily:

UltraEdit 32: http://www.ultraedit.com/ - A fantastic text editor
for markup or coding. Powerful.

ACT: http://www.act.com/ - I still use ACT 2000 because I've heard
the recent versions are bloated. It's old, but it works. Plus it
syncs perfectly with my handheld, which is crucial when on the road.

IRFranview: http://www.irfanview.com/ - A really cool image
manipulation app, highly recommended. I also really like ACDSee for
a viewer ( http://www.acdsee.com/products/acdsee/ ), and some ACDSee
guys are LEDers, too.

Putty: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ - SSH
terminal for Windows, couldn't live without it. WinSCP (
http://winscp.net/eng/index.php ) is also killer.

What about you - what software is crucial to your business?

Have a great weekend,
Adam

There are several ways to handle redirects.  For IE6 and earlier,
ISAPI Rewrite is really the best solution (
http://www.isapirewrite.com/ ).  IE7 has been completely rewritten,
and brings a much more flexible architecture, so you'll be able to
do redirects more like Apache, by specifying them in a config file.

I just sold WordProblems.com to a company who approached me out of
the blue.  The process was very easy...

1. They asked how much

2.  I gave them my price

3.  In this case they accepted, but they could have counter-offered,
much the way you might do a car or a house.

4.  Once the price was agreed upon we used Escrow.com to handle the
transaction.

5.  The customer gave Escrow.com the purchase amount, which was held
in trust.

6.  I provided access to the domain to the purchaser

7.  Once the buyer let Escrow.com know the access was in place,
Escrow.com released the funds.

8.  I received the check just last week.

Escrow.com charges a "handling fee" that in this case was paid by
the buyer.

I now have three domains ariz.com, net, org for which I am asking a
much higher figure, but the ease and comfort that Escrow.com offered
worked very well for me.

The tool provided by Google that Adam referenced in issue 2395 [
http://www.led-digest.com/content/view/1798/55/ ] automatically does
what you advise, Michael -- viz setting the index (home) page and
sitemaps to 1, and leaving everything else .5. The priority listing
option is only a nod to the search engines what you feel are your
highest priority pages and may have zero effect on how they're
crawled.

I agree that changing any priority listings is unnecessary. Don't
bother, it doesn't matter.

Regarding the RSS talk previously, at this point it's an essential
protocol to be using. If you're not already doing it, start soon.
