Subject: JavaScript Roll-over Text

Hi All

We are considering a new design for our Home page
(www.alpha.sohoprospecting.com/index-latest.shtml) that includes a
JavaScript navigation roll-over with rotating text.

There seems to be a controversy over whether that page will be
penalized for this feature or not and whether the text will be
spidered by googlebot and given some positive credit.  Some of our
consultants think the text will not be read, others think it will,
and yet others are concerned that the site will be penalized.

We would value the input of this board with respect to this.

Thanks!

It could. The potential is there for a site to out-rank you for your
own content, in effect stealing your organic search visitors.
Google's Adam Lasnik has spoken about this before. In his post about
duplicate content http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2006/12/...
he mentions the following:

-----------------
"However, we prefer to focus on filtering rather than ranking
adjustments ... so in the vast majority of cases, the worst thing
that'll befall webmasters is to see the "less desired" version of a
page shown in our index."
-----------------

This could mean that if CNET (an authority site that trumps much of
the Web) publishes dupes of your content, it will probably always be
indexed as the "original" piece of content and your original work
will be supplemental.

There's another issue as well. If Mochilla licenses your content to
less-than-reputable sites your brand could suffer, especially if its
a prominent part of the content. You lose all control of where it's
published. Your content is watered down.

On the plus side, if you require a link within the syndicated
content and have control over where it's published, it could be very
beneficial.

I would check to see how many pages are supplemental. Yes, pages in
the regular index can also be in the supplemental index, but overall
this is a great opportunity to make improvements. Check for things
like unique description tags, this helps Google index unique
content. Identical description tags are a dooming thing, and appear
to contribute to pages being bumped from the main index.

Optimize your title tags. Doing this with the description tags
should improve your organic results and traffic a great deal.

Pirates of the Caribbean, what a great flick.
Lots of kids want to grow up to be pirates.

Some go into the web content business. They loot
copy from one client and sell it to many more.

The clients get to walk the plank, because duplicate
copy is a big SE no-no. At http://GetWebContent.com/LED,
our copy is custom crafted for you and you alone.

In a word, no --- not with a two-page website.  There's a good
reason why we have the saying "content is king".  For the vast
majority of businesses, the vast majority of the time, three
components are needed; content, linking and optimization.

I cannot even begin to comprehend someone putting a restriction on
themselves like this.  What is the rationale?  Why wouldn't a
business want to maximize each main factor available to increase
their visibility?  All else being equal, more thematically related
content equals higher rank for more search terms.  Trying to do it
with two pages makes about as much sense as saying, "I really want
to grow my business and be successful, and I'm going to do it with
five minutes of networking per month."

Subject: Sitemap generators

Tom, I have used this in the past:

http://www.freesitemapgenerator.com/user/control-panel.html

It worked pretty well. But because our sites are dynamic I ended up
using a PHP class that can generate a sitemap. Any change to the
relevant parts of the database instantly triggers a new sitemap,
without any action on the user's part: I found the class here:

http://www.phpclasses.org/ggsitemap

Documentation for classes at this site is often not very good, but
if you are reasonably skilled with PHP you can work it out by
looking at the examples :-)

Subject: Sitemap generators

Hey Tom,

A great online sitemap generator we often use is
http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/. The amount of pages you can put in the
sitemap however is limited to a maximum of 500 pages. You can also
purchase a version that can be put on your own domain for almost
nothing that has an unlimited amount of pages. Really easy, works
with php, free updates, always works ! You can also automate the
sitemap generation with a cron job so you never have to worry about
it again.

With kind regards,

Thanks for the post, Joris, and the great discussion everyone.

I've mentioned this before, but directions for a free server-side
Python sitemap tool are here:

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/docs/en/sitemap-generator.html

It should be mentioned that many consultants are leary of using
server-side sitemap generation tools. Unless it's closely monitored,
the potential to have tons of garbage / duplicates / etc in your
sitemap is pretty high, especially with a dynamic site. So be
careful out there :-)

And don't forget to include a sitemap directive in your robots.txt
file per http://blog.ask.com/2007/04/sitemaps_autodi.html.

Thank you, Shel [Horowitz], for pointing out:

So true. There's a huge difference between a copywriter who's
experienced, and who charges rates which fit that experience, and a
"copywriter" who charges $20 an hour and then bills the client for
15 hours.

We have been delighted with www.webervations.com for our bed and

efficient and economical. The operators are very understanding about
