I noticed some referrals in my logs from this page: zscarinsurance.info/525753-91-0.html At the bottom of this page, they have a plain text link to my order page. I was trying to look at the code and see which company was serving the PPC ads. I noticed what the end user sees and what the search engines see, may be quite different. If I am advertising with the PPC service that is serving these ads, I want to cancel my account immediately. Does anyone know who the PPC service is? Thanks for broaching the questions regarding SEO's place in the overall marketing scheme. Marketers seem to be obsessed with SEO at the expense of many techniques which are just as important, if not more so, then losing sleep over the latest search engine optimization scheme. Eva mentioned the effectiveness of article marketing and she is spot-on. Since I discovered the ease, simplicity, and effectiveness of article marketing I have not been overly concerned with generating quality traffic, sales, or trying to keep up with the latest "secret revelation" of the so-called marketing gurus that fill our in-boxes with their newest twist or "must have" product. Building an effective online business model is, as you revealed so well in your 16 Points discussed back in 2000 at our e-commerce conference in Hawaii, a simple matter of following the basics... build great content... take care of your customers. Those 16 Points are still relevant today and, as I recall, there was no obsession with SEO mentioned anywhere [ http://www.led-digest.com/content/view/1286/174/]. Brad Waller (also one of our friends from that same event) talked about deep linking in an earlier response. The natural power of article writing and syndication to achieve that is well known. Like you, I am not suggesting that a knowledge of SEO will not be helpful. However, if you listen to some of the questions and responses on this and other discussion lists, you would think it is the most important issue of marketing online. I happen to consider it the least important of all the marketing issues on our table. Hope you are enjoying your time back as moderator... great to feel you presence again. I have not been doing SEO like I would like, and my sales may reflect that. However I do use eBay, participate in a number of forums like this and promote my business whenever I can there. I also use good old fashion word of mouth and sponsor local events, etc. Just because I have a website doesn't mean I only promote my business online. You have to work the proper blend of advertising use all the tools available. Not everyone uses computers or the internet. Rebecca Neilson H. L. If you get a cart from your host, you tie yourself to the host. If you want to subsequently move hosts it is much much harder as you also need to change carts and you potentially loose all your historical data. You have to be 110% certain that this is the right move. Back to your original question, changing hosts does not in itself affect your search engine positions. (Assuming both hosts are decent reliable hosts and your pages are always up when the spiders come looking) The problem you will have is three fold. Firstly in using a dynamic cart, all your page names will change.. The spiders will have a list of all your current pages, and these will all vanish. This will clearly have a detrimental effect on your position. You can mitigate this by doing a 301 re-direct for every page from its old static name to the new name, but this assumes that there is a decent one to one mapping. Secondly most dynamic carts with generated pages tend to do less well with the search spiders. Spiders prefer static pages. Spiders are reluctant to go too deep in a generated site for fear of getting into a loop. Many carts get around this by either having a static mirror or by doing clever things with modifying page names. Thirdly will you be able to optimise the generated pages in the same way you have now. Giving the right level of unique relevant titles, headers, paragraphs etc etc of content that your well ranking pages have now? If not then even if you overcome the first two problems you will be struggling to maintain your position. The problem with this is that many visitors in this definition are not really qualified. We are now adding a new metric that we have seen others write about: engaged visitor. We define this differently for each web site but a typical definition would be someone who did one of the following. Came to the site more than once, visited contact page, filled out a form for newsletter, or viewed more than x pages on the site. If that's the case, don't do it. You'll be spreading your PR around resulting in lower PR for each page. In addition, since it's the same content on each site, Google will apply the duplicate content filter sooner or later. That's my $.02 worth. I'm sure some will disagree.
