Eran Adams www.magnetic-products-store.com ======== CONTINUING =============================== From: Derek Andrews Subject: Wikipedia > Everyone knows... that Wikipedia.com is not a very > reliable source for factual information... It's fun to > play with WikiScanner.virgil.gr - Michael Linehan, LED Digest 2477 - http://www.led-digest.com/content/view/1888/190/ The fact that Wikipedia can be corrupted is nothing new, and I feel obliged to come to the defence of Wikipedia, which I have found to be a great source of information on all manner of subjects. OK, we have to be careful about the information, but then that has to be true of nearly all sources these days. I listen to the BBC and CBC news a lot, and very often feel that the information they present is incomplete, badly worded, and if taken out of context could lead to the wrong impression altogether. I read the Guardian's report on WikiScanner, and even that article leaves plenty to be desired. It totally neglects to mention that these anonymous edits could be made by people within these organisations who have no authority to make public comments, or perhaps by hackers who have hijacked a computer. No mention either of Jimmy Wales' (founder of Wikipedia) comment that they see WikiScanner as yet another tool to make Wikipedia even more transparent than it already is. I know of no other source of such a wide range of information where the reader can get links to reference sources, view the history of the contruction of the page and discuss the topic. It remains one of my most used sources of information, often ahead of Google. Derek Andrews http://www.seafoamwoodturning.com -------- new post - same topic -------- From: Shel Horowitz Subject: Wikipedia > And yet, the only way incorrect things have never been > published about you and your business is because > you have yet to make your local paper! - Amy D. Moore, LED Digest 2478 - http://www.led-digest.com/content/view/1889/190/ Ummm, no. I've been misquoted not only in my local papers but in such "infallible" media as the New York Times and Boston Globe. When you seek publicity, you expect a certain amount of getting it wrong. the good news: that gives you an excuse to write a cogent thank-you letter gently correcting the error, and if printed, that's extra publicity. And I do seek publicity, for myself and for my clients -- and have been quoted in numerous well-known media. Probably fewer than half got everything right. Shel Horowitz - Marketing Strategic Planning, Consulting, and Copywriting http://www.frugalmarketing.com -------- new post - same topic -------- From: Michael Linehan Subject: Wikipedia The problem isn't that some of the information is biased and of unknown veracity. That's not a problem at all when information is presented in a personal website, a business website, a blog or a forum. Then we fully expect the information to possibly be biased, mistaken, or partially true. The problem is that Wikipedia holds itself up to a repository of solid-as-steel fact. And they hold up anonymous editing to be the most wonderful way to guarantee accuracy. We now know that it is, quite simply, not so - that Wikipedia is wide open to prejudiced distortion. > Before you bash Wikipedia, be a part > of making it better. - Amy D. Moore Sorry - participation as an editor is not required to be "allowed" to point out the inherent critical flaw in the anonymous editing ability - especially when so many (unknowingly) view Wikipedia as possibly the most wonderful and definitive source of human knowledge in the Web 2.0 world. In fact, I would propose that pointing out these faults or programming Wikiscanner are very much part of the solution. Perhaps the flaws in the structure of the system can be addressed --- now that more people are becoming aware of them. I find it very disturbing to read those contributors mentioning their children taking Wikipedia as solid fact. We can hope that Wikipedia, if it cannot be fixed as such, will at least be viewed not as the ultimate place to find truth but as a possible *starting point* for research --- that is then followed up in more rigorously checked sources. Except provide a link off your site. Your visitors don't give a toss about web awards. They only care if you can solve their problem or fulfil their need. Steve Pronger http://www.stevepronger.com -------- new post - new topic -------- From: Alex Hughart Subject: LED > IMHO, this is an okay topic to have some fun with, but > let's keep it a silly diversion. I'd vote for LED Digest any day. - Tom Anson, LED Digest 2478 Sorry for joining in late on this topic. I disagree with Tom that this is a silly diversion. Companies change and evolve over time like anything else. Sooner or later, we all face a dilemma: should we stick to the original premise or change it? How do we know what is crucial to our business identity? It's a gamble that could have a disastrous consequences. Can you imagine Nike changing their "Just Do It" slogan to "Who Cares" or Coca-Cola deciding to go with green instead of red? These are the easy ones. Of course they wouldn't do it, one would think, so much is built on those brand elements. Then again, people are adaptable and have short memories. Verizon is now becoming AT&T. A few months from now, no one will remember that Verizon ever existed but, I'm sure, many CEOs agonized over this decision. Branding aside and back to LED... Hard to define online entities like LED Digest are becoming the norm rather than the exception. What is LED Digest anyway? As we've seen over the last few issue, there are many answers to this question and all of us might come up with more than one. However we try to explain what we do here, what topics we discuss, who's the moderator, etc. it all comes down to one thing: it's a community. Regardless of its actual size, LED always feels like our own little private club. We are so accustomed to its spirit and unspoken rules that we never think of some antiquated acronyms that used to describe it. But, how would you describe LED to someone who has never heard of it? After all, acquiring new members / customers is the goal no matter what you do. Learn - Exchange - Discuss sounds about right to me considering that this community is open to everyone willing to learn and share, it's free and pretty much self-regulated. As such, it's more than "user generated content" and it's more than advertising vehicle for its founders and sponsors. I'm sorry to say this to the wonderful Audette gang but, your baby is not your baby anymore! Over the years, it became OUR baby - brought to you by Audette Media. The youngster is all grown up and it doesn't want to be called Link Exchange anymore because, OMG, it's so last century! Let's call it what it is right now and see if it evolves into something else ten years down the road (let's hope it's not going to start smoking pot and lay on the couch all day long, not that there's anything wrong with that).
