Subject: Content

We have found that adding relevant content gets easier. However,
first you need a community of users who have 'invested' in your
site, to the point where they are prepared to offer suggestions as
to how to make the site better.

For this reason I find it is essential to keep a feedback forum
running (making sure no-one can post urls in order to discourage the
viagra merchants). Every now and then we get messages saying things
like, 'where can I find information on XX, because your site does
not have it' or 'hey, why don't you do ....'

Once we have enough suggestions, we add the content, as we know
people want it. I still recall one section that we developed at
considerable time and expense because marketing thought it was a
good idea, and it remains a virtually user-free desert.

The problem with this wonderful technique is that you need plenty of
pro-active users for the content they want. How do you get and keep
these users? Yup, great content. That's why I said it gets easier.

Thanks to everyone for the excellent additions and clarifications on
that post.

For some of these ideas and others that could also be added - I
confined myself to just one simple, key point for any readers who
don't, already, regularly do it, i.e. to ***add copy***.  I hoped to
politely shock them into realizing what they are giving up if they
are not doing so.

Once the basic point has profoundly gotten through and been totally
committed to, then is the best time to talk about and sort out the
details --- deciding what is most useful, how much is needed, how
frequently, whether to write or employ a writer, where to find a
writer, what long-tail keywords are we going to add, and so on.

In my mind, the first key point is for the business owner to truly
and totally get the power of and the necessity for adding copy.
There's no point in spending all the time planning what copy is best
and how frequently it will be added if the business owner is not yet
committed. (Done that. Been there. It's now written into my
contracts.)

And easy compared to what?  Compared to numerous other business-
building activities, on and off the Web. Compared to the
optimization needed to get a site to #1 out of 100,000,000 page
returns for the primary competitive keyphrase. So for any readers
who are not already adding copy regularly, I stand by my (yes, very
simplistic) formulation that adding copy is so easy, that it amounts
to picking up free money. If you believe that and are, therefore,
committed, the details can easily be worked out.

From: Nancy Cardinali
Subject: AOL browsers

Hi All!

First, I want to thank everyone who took the time to look, and to
respond. I received several phone calls as well as emails. Thank you
to all. This week has been... well, I also do elder care and it's
been an exhausting week. Please forgive my silence.

Second, I want to apologize for the absence of an email address in
my post. This forced folks to use the email form on my website,
which I didn't think a big deal. However, those who wanted to send
screen shots (bless you!) were unsure how to send via the form - I
still don't know if you can, but that's another subject for a slow
day.

I never do this - but I'm butting in.

About email addresses -- don't forget that with each post comes the
poster's email address! It's right there under the name, encoded in
the Flow-To URL. Click on it and send an email to anyone posting in
the LED. Trust me, it works!

I'll leave now.

Leanne Wicks sent a PDF and Cheryl Berry sent 2 .BMP files. Guess
what? They do not show the same problems, meaning their browsers
read them differently. Thank you ladies! See this page for the
images: http://www.CardinaliDesigns.com/DrLB/browserproblems.html

And finally, based on the images received, I know what I have to do
to 'fix' it. William Thompson's post further clarified which
divisions I need to tweek on my style sheet.

Now I will attempt to collate all this information. Please
understand I am NOT trying to be the expert on this. I simply feel
this information may be of use to others. I thought checking my
websites on Opera, Safari, IE, Firefox and Netscape on my Mac and
Firefox and IE on my PC was quite enough! Wrongo.

One more thing I KNOW someone out there can help me with: how do you
determine what version of a program you are using on a PC? It's an
easy click on a Mac, but I have yet to find the easy way on PC.

* The Fix: the division widths (in the style sheet) need to be
tweeked to prevent the body of the page from dropping down. This is
a problem I always run into with a new design and is so simple to
fix, if you have all the browsers to check it in! So let's move from
fixing the coding problem to the browser issue.

* I have been told it is NOT simply an AOL issue. I have to assume
that is correct.

* The web site renders absolutely fine in these:

* On the PC (Windows XP):
        AOL browser - newly downloaded
Firefox (latest, I assume - this is a new laptop)
        IE 7

* On the Mac (OS 10.3.9):
        Safari 1.3.2 (v312.6)
        Firefox 1.5
        Opera 7.54u2 (free version)
IE 5.2.3 (5815.1) Highest available for Mac
        Netscape 7.2
AOL - I did download the free version of AOL to Mac, but it won't
accept my Comcast Cable connection. I'll have to play with dial-up
        to get it to work.

Why it looks fine for me in PC IE7, but not for another is a
complete mystery to me.

I'm guessing I need to download IE 5 & 6 for PC; the Mac IE is
version 5... it makes no sense!

At this point, that is all the information I have. I am hoping we
can figure out the best way to make sure our websites render
correctly in all platforms, browsers. I really don't want to revert
to tables for placement, but if placing a table around the page
makes it work everywhere, then I'm a table dancer! :)

Again, thanks for all the input. I hope I will be less preoccupied
next week to answer some emails / phone calls.
