Subject: Hiring Marketing Manager

Hello Everybody,

For years I have been developing my own company which offers
advertising on the net and have had some success with growing it and
producing sizeable revenue with very good revenue to employee ratio
of about $250,000 per employee per year.

I have gotten to the point right now where I believe I need high
powered Marketing Manager who could help bring my company to the
next level. Who could develop partnerships, strategies and help with
designing of new directions.

I'm about to start placing ads in online job sites, but I'm facing a
challenge. How will I be able to evaluate such a person?

How can I evaluate such future member of my organization who should
bring skills into my company, which I'm not aware of from my own
experience.

I hired many employees over the years, but they usually were
programmers, customer support representatives for whom there are
well designed certification tests and technical evaluation is
relatively easy.

I'm looking for some ideas.

I want to thank Mark for this excellent post. At least for me it is
excellent. I have clients (myself too) that use some of the Google
products but I have been using AddFreeStats.com (a free and quite
good but not perfect free tracking) reasonably successfully but it
only goes so far.

But Mark's link to Google Analytics led me to Google Checkout. I'm
already using AdSense and Adwords on various sites. Google seems to
be doing a good job of linking the usability of its various products
so that Analytics also helps you analyse AdSense and AdWords.

At least this is how it looks. But has anyone from LED actually used
the "suite" of tools successfully? Sure Google has a video of a
happy camper who has prospered using the suite, but then they would
wouldn't they? If so I would very much like to hear about it. Google
also has blogger.com.

I am doing a redo of a simple product intro site I made a few years
ago (wind-chaser.com). Now the client has actually got product being
produced and in a container on its way to us (affordable land
sailors for the whole family would you believe) and suddenly after
several years of a languishing site I have to fall all over myself
to help them sell 300 of these things as fast as possible. So a
suite of interacting tools seems like a very good idea to me.

BUT is it? Please share.

Thanks you.

A hidden URL on the home page, transparent images linked to the
website? I see. On a different topic, how do these websites rank in
the SERPs?

Subject: Placing links

To place or not to place.... I see arguments for both sides but,
let's say, the work should be signed. The question is what kind of
work are we signing? Is it the visual design, copywriting,
photography, seo, custom applications, ecommerce development, etc.?
We all know that a good website has so many different components,
rarely done by the same person or even agency. So, who gets the
credit?

One solution - that would definitely "cheapen the overall
experience" - would be to have long movie-type credits to include
everybody, from directors to food caterers. On the other hand, being
properly credited for the work done is essential in this freelancing
world we live in. Maybe the solution is to have an entity, a guild
of some sort, in charge of categorizing the work, assigning credits,
deal with potential disputes, etc., similar to the entertainment
guilds. Clients would have the added benefit of being able to check
somebody's work endorsed by a reputable (hopefully reputable!) third
party. I'm talking here of simply putting a name to a job done,
without free-for-all reviews that are not always helpful (50% loved
it, 50% hated it) and easily manipulated. Clients can go from there
and look for further references if they wish. Does something like
this already exist?

Case in point.

When I reviewed the Adam guy's web site, the first thing I did was
clickity-clicked on the "designed by link".  Especially, recovering
from cancer, with limited site, I read it as Brass Balls.  Man, I
was plain curious!  Anyway, when I come across a nice site design
I'm interested. You bet!  I'm also interested when I come across a
crap web site.  But that's me being in the business.

I would also like to see internet marketers and seo dudes/dudettes
signature the web sites they worked, as well.  Do y'all think that
THAT will ever happen!?!

When I do contract work, it's in the contract.  My link appears.  If
the client wishes otherwise, they can freely opt to nix it.  Of
course the contract price doubles ... JUST KIDDING.

Listen, most everyone claims that the W.W.W. is about information.
Content.  Well amigos, the link(s) are information.  Most befitting,
hey?

And yes, I used the browser's Google search box to get to Audette
Media.  Any complaints?  Click on the link below and I'll tell ya
why.

I appreciate your honesty in posting to the list, but the
transparent image link clearly only serves one purpose, and that is
to provide you with the benefit of a link. That's widely considered
search engine spam and it could have a negative effect on the
client's site, or yours, if detected or reported.

If you are asking the client for permission to add your image or
link then I don't see a problem, except if it's "hidden" and your
client does not understand the "risk".

Thanks,

From: Dan Rosenfield
Subject: Linking to Website Designers

I would like to remind LED readers that it may well be the client's
idea to link to his/her website designer.  My designer webchick.com
not only designs and maintains my sites at reasonable cost, she also
links to them from her website and announces them in her blog.

Thus, I insist that her logo (with a link) appear on my sites.

Why wouldn't I want to help her business grow?

From: David Spahr
Subject: Placing Links on Client Sites

If I were hiring a designer for my site I would either not hire you
or I would remove the link if it was in the footer of every page.

I would want my site to utterly rock. The operative word is "my". If
my visitors wanted to know who was responsible for my site's design
rocking I would be glad to tell them. If you wanted a link in one or
two unobtrusive, appropriate places that would be fine.  I certainly
don't need my visitors having the opportunity on every page to leave
and visit an unrelated site (yours).

If I provide the ideas, concept, content, and money for the project
I'm certainly not sharing the copyright. The only kind of contract I
would enter into would be a "work for hire" contract. What if I want
a change later on and bring in someone else? Am I going to let them
have a piece of the action too? Change the footer and have you come
back later and complain or litigate?

I have websites because I have ideas that are not yours. That's why
copyrights, patents, and trademarks exist. I'm just bringing you in
to help me execute my ideas.

To me, a site with the designers name in the footer of every page
does not rock. If you tried to force that by contract, I would get
someone else. If you are as good as you think you are, people will
ask.

Subject: Email Overload - Using Gmail

Hi Adam

The other Adam's system for archiving email sounds great from an
organisational point of view. But I've always hesitated to use gmail
for business and even personal mail because of privacy concerns --
currently I pretty much only use it for list subscriptions like this
one.

I know Google "doesn't do evil" ;-) but how do you know that will
always be the case? If you store all of your email on their servers,
they will end up knowing a heck of a lot about you. What security
and privacy guarantees do they offer? What happens if you wake up
one morning and your email archive has disappeared? I'd be
interested to hear your and Adam B's take on this.

Regards
