I was just reading a piece where people were debating the short term marketing projections for online sales in light of ongoing economic uncertainty around the world. One of the points made was that people are more likely to continue the purchase of non-necessities (MP3 players, music, candy, etc.) online rather than the more mundane necessities / staples of life during a downturn in the economy. If this premise is true then people selling low dollar items have a much more secure sales future laid out in front of them because their sales will be less likely to be hurt in an unstable economy. What are your thoughts on this? Should we all be branching out our marketing efforts into the area of more frivolous things? Will there actually be more sales stability or even increases in those marketing areas for online sales over the next couple of years than for the slightly bigger ticket items such as, well, what? Now that I think about it a bit more, are sales of clothing, blenders, bags of sugar and computer desks all that powerful in the market compared to MP3 players, candy, and flowers? In terms of online sales which market is likely to be less sensitive to a downturn in the economy? Necessities or small luxuries? Assuming that your web pages are well-written, the most effective marketing technique that you can apply directly to your web site is to go through every < title > < /title > and make sure they reflect the content of your web pages, using keywords where appropriate, but never stuffing. Renee Kennedy -------- new post - new topic --------- From: Richard Stubbings Subject: International SEO QUESTION: "How do you optimize international sites? As an American SEO, how can I offer UK businesses my skills? What's different, what's the same?" ANSWER: Learn how to spell in UK English. Optimise, not optimize. It could be a vital difference. Received this from a client just this morning -- she runs a consultancy business to help people relocate to Sydney: ------------------- "I wanted to put an immigration agent's site under my Links - he and I work together quite closely and his site attracts a lot of traffic. He is going to put my website on his webpage in return. The website is..." ------------------- What SEO consultant in their right mind would advise a client that this is a bad thing to do, just because it's an unfashionable reciprocated link? It's the perfect example of reciprocation for the right reasons. My suggestion to her would be to get the immigration guy to write an article, tailored to her site, with an in-context link to him, and for her to do the same. This is adding *value* to both sites. It's linking for the benefit of visitors, and the SEO benefits are just a flow on. Of course, linking in this manner is by no means easy. It requires a commitment of time or resources which most webmasters aren't prepared to make. Therein lies the problem with reciprocal linking, we are just so used to it being done the wrong way. It goes something like this: "Hi, I was surfing the Net and just happened to come across your wonderful site. So I've added it to a links page 7 layers deep so no human will ever find it and which isn't indexed with any search engine, along with 147 other links which have absolutely nothing to do with my site. So please do likewise for me and we'll both benefit enormously in the search engines. Oh, and you've got 3 days to do it or I'll delete your link, and boy won't you regret it." Reciprocal linking for me is just part of overall link building strategy with includes those new-age tactics like bookmarking and social media. You know, the ones some SEOs think are a big secret, but really aren't. But thankfully there are still people like Dirk who are passionate about fundamental strategies like reciprocal linking, not just because he has the experience and knowledge to apply it correctly, but to build a business around it. I don't know anyone who runs a business based on a strategy which doesn't work, do you? Steve Pronger http://www.stevepronger.com/freebook/ (c) Copyright 1995-2007 Orange Wheel, LLC.
