Sure, it's a slow time of year... but that's no excuse for not contributing to the LED! :) -Adam (who probably had too much caffeine today) ---------------- From: Nancy Cardinali Subject: PDF downloads opening in browser! Hey All! I am having a problem with PDF downloads opening in the browser window instead of... well, downloading! I don't have the problem on Mac except for Safari. (Opera, IE & Firefox are fine - the file is downloaded.) On the PC it seems all versions except maybe Firefox, open the PDF in the browser. The worst part is I can't figure out how to exit the viewing window and download the file! I figure I'm a tad more savvy than the average viewer, so how would they know what to do?! I'm figuring it has something to do with the way I present the file for download. This is what I'm doing: If you go here: http://haroldrmiller.com/TheEmeraldHeadCaper.html you are presented with an electronic press kit at the bottom of the page. Click on the last one, as it is the smallest. This is the file path: http://haroldrmiller.com/pdf/Bio.pdf I've downloaded pdfs from other sites and there is a blank window that opens first, then the download begins. Could this be my problem? Do I have the download process set up incorrectly? I hate that blank browser window, but I'm beginning to believe it has a purpose! Thanks to all. I'm speaking from the perspective of a non- > marketer who is attempting to learn objectively > about SEO and marketing on the interenet. In other > words I know diddly-squat about the industry. - Al Toman, LED Digest 2542 - http://www.led-digest.com/content/view/1957/190/ The structure of this post is very clever. 1. Edify the host/list owner. 2. Introduce the basis of a reasonable argument 3. Make generalizations about a group of individuals without naming specifics. 4. Be very specific about endorsing a particular individual that is in all likelihood competing with those in #2. Al, did you just spam the LED Digest with a Brad Callen pitch? Lee Odden Online Marketing Blog http://www.toprankblog.com <Moderator Comment> In defense of Al, his post actually started as a personal email to me. I thought the list could use his thoughts, so ran it as a post. Also, I think Al was referring to Brad Fallon of seoelite.com, but neglected to catch that yesterday. Sorry about that! .. and I don't think Al's an affiliate :) -------- new post - same topic --------- From: Dirk Johnson Subject: Non-marketers > these SEO marketing guys are just 99% talk > and 1% action, if you're lucky. - Al Toman If you read my posts in LED Digest over the last several years, you will see that my main concern is for the small business owner, and not to impress the SEO community. I agree with you that the SEO world is awash in flim flam. Self promotion trumps facts, in most cases. It's a game of bombast and imagined "leading edge" quackery that is built to garner headlines and fame. We became frustrated by clients and prospective clients coming to us in a thoroughly confused or misguided state of mind. Quite often, they have been reading the SEO forums and celebrity SEO blogs, and coming away with all kinds of SEO mythology lodged in their heads. They think that they need to jump through all kinds of hoops, with one-way link schemes, misconstrued "link bait", and all kinds of expensive and confusing gamesmanship that is pervasive in the highly visible SEO world. We often have to do an intervention on these clients first, then set them on a more practical path of action, if they are willing. So we decided to put all of this "on paper", if you will. In a document that takes about an hour to read, and it doesn't cost a dime. Since our primary market is real estate agents and brokers, our book was written for them, but the concepts apply to any business. This guide to the SEO basics was written for the business owner, and not to dazzle the SEO community. We've tried to avoid "SEO speak". It is called "Search Engine Optimization Basics For Real Estate-Related Websites" http://www.domaindrivers.com/seobasics-realestate-main.htm If you read it, you will see that there are no magic bullets or big secrets. It is extraordinarily straightforward. But to do this properly, it takes and investment of both time and money, combined with a good foundation of knowledge. And that is usually the difference between site owners who are successful in "free search" marketing and those who are not. Al, I have had the opportunity to observe what some very successful site owners have done to get to the top and stay on top. It is remarkably basic, and often quite inexpensive, in relative terms. It is not "leading edge", by any means. They simply cover the basics, then get links, and keep getting links. I have no problem with good "link bait" or proper social networking. When it is done thoughtfully, it can provide a huge advantage and a very good return-on-investment. Adam's own post in LED Digest 2542 explains how that is done. I'd prefer to call that good, solid marketing advice that results in links. But I do shake my head at some of the other expensive, complicated, and obtuse "bait" strategies that are now promoted by many of the leading SEO gurus. They might work, but at what cost? Why are they ignoring the basics, and going for the fluff first? It does make sense to hire an SEO consultant that will work with you, and that will help you cover the basics, for a reasonable fee. They can save you a lot of time and also provide experienced advice. When that is done, they can also advise on the more exotic methods of link baiting. But choose carefully. Celebrity status in the SEO world is no indication of skill, or concern for your investment. Knowledge is your best defense, and offense. We've put what we know on the table, for all to see, and we've seen it in action, in hundreds of situations. For what it's worth. Hopefully, we're in the 1% category. We just show them what their competitors are doing in the social media space and that usually does the trick. Ron Spinner http://www.aims.co.il (c) Copyright 1995-2007 Orange Wheel, LLC.
