<Moderator Comment>

Greetings LEDer, and may this issue find you in health, happiness, and
the possession of a caffeinated beverage. I caught a nasty flu this week
and have been really suffering. Being sick simply sucks (but it does
seem to have nice alliterative perks, doesn't it).

Things are just really s-l-o-w out there in the land of LED. Why not try
to change that by posting something?! There's a thought (I kid because I
love).

On that note, now's a good time to introduce our new moderators to the
list. We'll send them out into the wilds of moderating very soon - maybe
next week depending on how much I can get done in the meantime.

Without further ado, here are our new mods:

From: Jeremy Weiss

In response to Adam's (repeated) request for a bio, here's a little bit
about me. I've been married for nearly 13 years and have four children,
all girls (stop shaking your head). I currently reside in Panama City,
Florida, and it's a big change from the small towns in Arkansas where I
grew up. I have eleven years experience in web development and internet
marketing. My primary focus is to teach clients how to use their website
to it's fullest potential. I'm more concerned with the number of leads /
sales generated by a site than with the bells and whistles people are so
fond of these days. And all the leads in the world are of no use if
there isn't a system in place to ensure the leads get the attention they
need, so I often build php / MySQL back office type programs to help
companies manage the leads. Oh, and I want to thank Adam for letting me
help out. I think it'll help in my quest for world domination.

Do you have any info or feedback from StoresOnline seminars? Anyone that
has been successful with this program?

Thanks,

From: Al Toman
Subject: Photo Sites - SmugMug

Someone inquired about photography web sites in a past issue of LED
Digest way back when.

I came across a top notch photography web site, www.smugmug.com, that
may interest photo-type LEDers.  They also have some nice "gift"
products related to photography for us non-photo-types.

It is well-marketed.  I read the profile of these guys in an off-line
article. These guys can be your next door neighbor yet they are no small
potatoes.  They closely work with Amazon.com and other big names.  I
mean CEO to CEO.  To put it in another way, a million bucks to them is
beer money, pocket change.

If whomever is looking to post photos professionally, then, this may be
a good place to start (stats below).  There is a subscription fee but it
may be worth paying instead of creating a new web site, to start.  It's
definitely a "social" web site but it makes UTube,  MySpace,  Facebook,
etc, look like  kiddie corner (aka SEO playground), comparatively.

It's very well done.

stats:

links:
google ........... 17,200
msn ..............  0
yahoo ...........  11,077
total .............   28,277

saturation:
google ........... 16,400,000
msn ............... 01,100,000
yahoo ............ 22,336,652
total ............... 39,836,652

keywords:
"online photo albums" is the first keyword listed in their keyword meta
tag and they place on SERP "1" Check their other keywords on their site.
They list them for you.

Kind regards,
Al Toman

ps: okay, so I like to dig SEOers just a tad

They're not promising anything they should not be able to deliver, but
they are not promising to deliver either traffic or sales: "This
service(s) does not guarantee any sales or traffic to your Web site.
Traffic and sales depend upon the demand for your particular product or
service, the design and layout of your Web site, and many other factors
that are beyond the control of Network Solutions."

It looks like promotional hype to me, a bit more honest than a lot of
promotional hype I have seen before, but still promotional hype.

None of our clients have come to us about this.  If they did, I would
read the fine print to them very carefully.

To play it safe with search engines, assume they are very simple minded
when following links.  As in the above post, they are very unlikely to
follow CGI based links.  The same is true for Javascript based links.
While you may include such *fancy* approaches for links to impress (?)
visitors or to allow a really neat (?) design, to be sure search engines
will spider your site you should always make sure you have plane
old-fashioned <a xhref="..." links to be sure the robot will finds its
way.
