You use the same Subject line for 2 issues of LED in a row! And the same issue number! Sorry about that. If you didn't read yesterday's issue, it had the identical subject as last Friday's. So go back and read it, cuz it's got lots of good info inside on Article Marketing, Conferences, and other stuff: http://www.led-digest.com/content/view/2014/190/ By the way... I forgot to mention two of my favorite presenters from SMX. Debra Mastaler (who rocks) from http://thelinkspiel.blogspot.com and Eric Ward who needs no introduction here. Onward we go! I can't stay away from the 100% cacao chocolate bars I have in my office. Man these are good. CALLING ALL LURKERS Oh you're out there. Lurking lurkers hiding in the shadows of the LED... reading every issue, or just bits and pieces. Sampling the wares. But never putting a coin in the box before you leave. Now's your chance to repay that karmic debt you owe the LED regulars, and POST something dammit. Sure things are slow sometime... and it cycles. That's all good. But occasionally the lurker needs just a teensy bit of motivation to reveal himself. It can be uncomfortable, I know. But think how GOOD it will feel to post to the list? People will adore you, or argue with you, they might tease you a little bit, but in the end you'll be better off for it. So what are you waiting for? The time has come to de-lurk and cleanse yourself in the light of public scrutiny. POST something you lurkers! -Adam ----------------- From: Marty R. Milette Subject: Ethics Just wanted to relate a little story from this weekend -- on the topic of ethics... I was looking for some sample business plans for a flight school / sightseeing flights business I intend to start in Russia. (Investors, feel free to ask about it :) I located this business plan on the web, http://www.morebusiness.com/aircraft-rental-business-plan correctly credited "Business Plan Courtesy of Palo Alto Software". I then went on to buy a business plan template from this company: "business plan database com" (I don't want them to benefit from an LED Digest link.) The surprise I got, was that in going through the two plans was that a great amount of the content was just copied and pasted from the Palo Alto plan. Only the names of the companies were changed and some additional bogus content added. For example, in one plan you have the text: --------------- "Statesville Flight School will also provide primary and advanced flight instruction through the use of independent flight instructors possessing corporate and airline backgrounds. Statesville Flight School will offer professional aviation consulting for corporate, airline, and individual aviation needs." --------------- and in the other --------------- "Lansing Aviation will also provide primary and advanced flight instruction through the use of independent flight instructors possessing corporate and airline backgrounds. Lansing Aviation will offer professional aviation consulting for corporate, airline, and individual aviation needs." --------------- (In case you didn't notice, only the company name was changed -- as in the rest of the pirated material.) Where I come from, when you take someone else's work and publish it as your own, it would be called "plagiarism", but when you start selling it, you move into the territory of fraud. (Copyright and other legal issues not even considered.) As is typical with crooks, they claim complete and total innocence. (Like that idiot I previously reported in LED Digest who stole much of my web site but was too stupid to change my name and address inside the source...) Here is what he sent back as his 'analysis': "You asked us to check the plans and we have done so and we have found that out of the 6,181 words on our plan and the 4,674 plans on theirs there is around 300 words of similarity.". In fact, I took the two plans, put them side-by-side in a word document and proved that the actual count of words that are IDENTICAL (not just a 'similarity') is closer to 2,060 -- in other words, over 30% of the document. (I can send anyone the PDF file on request -- it is amazing.) The thief wasn't particularly bright about it either -- having replaced references for a Cessna 172 with a Citation business jet -- hardly suitable for each other's intended purposes. :) I hope to teach this petty crook a lesson -- when you are caught stealing, caught lying and refuse to refund the money or admit guilt-- better think about the consequences -- negative publicity isn't necessarily good just because it is free. Marty R. Milette http://hotel-club.net ======== CONTINUING =============================== From: David Spahr Subject: SEO relevance factors > I would also question the long held theory > that search engines ignore keyword meta > tags -- I have no doubt that a sophistcated > outfit like Google would use all means at > their disposal to utilise any info that is > presented to their bots. - Leon Simmons, LED 2596 - http://www.led-digest.com/content/view/2011/190/ I certainly agree with this. I find evidence of use of meta keywords and descriptions in various search results when researching my own sites. Although the biggest and most important, Google is not the only game in town. Other search sites show different results and tag usage. Curiously, the one that shows the most relevant top ten for my niche (IMHO) is ask.com. We really shouldn't settle in too much in our assumptions about how the various tags are used. There is always something new around the next corner. I recently discovered a new Wiki feature called AboutUs Wiki Page. Like most things Wiki, I'm guessing this will become much more important. I found a page there about my own site which summarizes virtually everything about the site including title, description, language, contact info, registrar, alexa info, external links and keywords. Also there was a page screenshot and various research info available. Yikes. I have no idea how it got there or how long it has been there. Having researched inbound links in the past, I don't remember seeing it before in the first 20. There were pages there for some of my other sites as well. Also, I was researching inbound links a bit because I was trying to figure out why my traffic jumped almost 3x in the last month. Since I have 4900+ inbound links there was only a certain amount of that I could do. My log files showed nothing very illuminating either other than quite a few referrals from Google images. I checked Google news. Nothing. Stumped but not complaining. Business has been pretty decent. Do LEDers not care > about standards? - Tom Aman Using CSS in Optimizing Your Web Pages I hear SEO speak a lot about web page optimization so I'll join the voice. I might even become a speaker at one of em SEO conferences and network, mingle, and get that momentary buzz of warm fuzzy feeling with fellow SEO. YEAH, RIGHT! Regardless whether you're a CSS strict or a 1920's tables-based web page designer, life is about to become a breeze. Then again, CSS has always been a breeze. So, it'll get more breezy. There is such an animal called css tables. It could not be spoke of amongst web page makers until the Browser Giants start to pay attention to Web Standards. Billion dollar Gates has been keeping this animal at bay until, hopefully, the release of the IE8 browser. I can't wait! I like breeze. Now I will be able to create web pages 10 times faster and charge 10 times more (It used to be 30bucks per static page) and create 10 times as many web pages. Let's see, that's 300 bananas a web page, times ... divided by .... raised to the power of ten .... take away a piece of pi .... ! Yup! I'll be able to reach Gate's fortunes by the time I'm over 1,000 years old! What a breeze! Feels good up the ol' boxer shorts.
