Subject: Signal to Noise - Online Aggregators?

I've been reading and lurking here for some time and it may be time to
come out of the woods again.  Let me say that my major objective in my
Net reading is to maximize my signal to noise ratio. If I'm going to
devote my time and attention to something or somebody, there has to be a
good payoff there, a good signal to noise ratio.

I don't get Facebook nor Twitter. There I've said it... classed myself
as a dinosaur to some folks. I do have accounts but they're
placeholders. But having to sort through somebody's post about taking
kids to ballgames, posting from a phone to tell me his kid got mustard
on his jeans ad nauseum to discover the post about some marketing
insight isn't a productive use of my time. The signal to noise ratio is
not where I want to spend the hours I have.

Even blogs are losing it for me. My feedlist took a major hit last week
when I whacked about 30% outright and demoted another 30% to the bottom
of the feedlist (the closer you are to the bottom, the more in danger
you are of leaving my attention span). Folks didn't seem to be saying
anything; instead using a lot of guest bloggers or rolling over the same
old trite stuff. Advance your points or lose my attention. It was a
necessary culling as my list had reached into the three figure range -
now it's back down to low 60's. It was an across-the-board cull - niche
interests as well as marketing. And several "biggies" were cut (not that
they'll notice or care). ;-)

The success of my online company has brought me to the point of having
to sort out the wheat from the chaff - these social networking sites
simply didn't cut it for the time I have to spend. I just couldn't
figure out how I'd sort out the good/bad and plain ugly from the mass of
data. And I'm no longer willing to spend time doing so. Give me a
twitter filter and I might come back. :-) Give me an aggregator of good
posts and I'd be intrigued enough to follow it.

I don't pretend to be a seminal thinker in this Net world, I try to find
what works in my niche and implement quickly, moving things forward and
testing as I go. And the resources I need to do that are inside twitter
and facebook I'm sure but teasing them out is no longer worth the time.
And yes, I did look at FriendFeed - now there's a whole 'nother story of
overload. :-)

The point of all this? Blogs such as TechCrunch or Boing-boing are on
the top of their respective feed areas for me because they aggregate,
they edit the net for me. Are there other good aggregators out there
that do similar things that can add to the signla and eliminate the
noise? I'd be interested in your take on this.

From: Chris Nielsen
Subject: Escrow.com May Not Be Safe

Many people use services like Escrow.com to ensure that long distance or
high dollar amount transactions don't have problems. Well scammers are
now selling items and then following up with what looks like an email
from Escrow.com. The buyer is asked to wire money to Escrow.com which of
course is not normal. If the buyer wires the money, it's gone.

The lesson is that you should always contact the financial company
directly outside of the contact information in the email to make sure
it's real.

Thanks,
Chris Nielsen

From: Tom Anson
Subject: Site search

I'm looking for a good, dependable site search option for my website.  I
took a quick look at Google site search, but I'm not ready to spend $100
per year to get something without ads.

I have five sites I'd like to ad site search to, so I'm looking for
something inexpensive -- or free.

I've looked briefly at BraveNet, but really don't have the technical
expertise to judge different options.  Any suggestions or warning out
there?

Thanks for your help.

Wordpress is excellent for this and it has several advantages.

1. It means that you don't have to charge someone a fortune to setup
their web site. I'm thinking of running courses for individuals to just
get them started.

2. They look very professional and are well suited for simple one-off
web sites. Here's one I did to publicise some papers that I bought on
eBay. http://minchenden1947.wordpress.com/  It took me about four hours
to put the lot up.

3. In the Minchenden example, I want feedback, so Wordpress has all of
this built in. So if you want a forum as well, Wordpress has it.

4. But the biggest advantage is that you don't have to do anything at
all about SEO. That all comes free.

5. As does the hosting.

I haven't said anything about what Wordpress can do technically, as
there is very little it can't.

Subject: Sales trick

This was an interesting thread. In the end, I think it can bode well as
a part of an SEM presentation as a live example of how PPC works. Any
other representation would be misleading. Isn't our job to educate
clients as well?
