Greetings LEDers,

Another week ahead for the world's oldest marketing discussion list! I
don't have much to say. Lately it seems like I'm too busy, too tired,
too distracted, or just too lazy to comment more on the list. It takes a
lot of work even without writing comments, and sometimes putting the
issue together is all I can manage. It's a lot of work. Juggling a blog,
clients, a business, my family, friends, and travel with the daily LED -
a big reason it's lasted this long is because it's a labor of love.

My friend Todd Mintz of http://www.sempdx.org was kind enough to do an
interview with me recently. Here it is if you're interested - he asked
some great questions:

Of course the LED isn't all about me - far from it. It exists for people
like you. You drive it, you fuel it, you maintain its culture and
quality. Thanks for being a part of the list. If you're lurking, why not
take a moment to post? If you're a regular poster, thank you! Your
contributions help more than you know - there are many subscribers here
but too few voices. We need more voices :)

Have a fantastic week. And be a voice!

-Adam

Subject: Stupid Google

I'm responding to Tom Aman's post that parents are the biggest
influencers on kids.

I have to call back Hillary Clinton's "It takes a village to raise a
child..."

Yes, parents are an influence, and try as we might to curb other
influences such as bad friends, bad TV and bad internet... this is not
possible unless we want to shut them away from the world altogether.

I used to think that it was all about the parents, but lately, since my
kids are now teenagers and starting to move away from us, I don't think
that as much anymore.  In fact, sometimes, it's downright discouraging.
This age of the Internet forces them to experience so much more
information than we ever had to deal with.

I'd also throw in cell-phone use is also influencing them.  In fact, my
kids are in constant communication with their friends via text
messaging.  They talk to their friends more than they talk to their
parents.  At times, it's annoying and we've taken away their phone
privileges.  But, again, I'm not a proponent of shutting them away from
the world.  I want them prepared to deal with the world, as it is, and
the only way to do that is to let them out into it and allow them to
swim.

Google, the Internet, and cell-phones aren't making us stupider, they're
just making us different, maybe more grown up.

Subject: Internet marketing

Hi everyone,

In response to Mark Medlicott's response to my response to his response
to my question . . .

I am frequently amazed at how differently different English-speaking
people use "the same" language.  And, it's not just from different
places in the world.  Here, "aromatherapy" is a very familiar word, but
what people mean by it, generally, is a far cry from what I mean by it.
In fact, I've included a whole article on my site defining what it
isn't, so people can begin to understand what it is.  You can see it at
http://www.doterra-aromatics.com/info/aromatherapy.html.  That said, I
do have a fair amount of traffic to my site from New Zealand, so the use
of terms must not be terrible.

Your point that "healthcare" was just an example, not an actual
suggestion, is well taken.  I actually wrestled with what to call this
section of my website, because I, too, was not really keen on it.  But,
after beating my brains for quite a while -- at looking at WordTracker,
where aromatherapy information was actually listed as a good keyword --
I decided that it wasn't such a bad choice afterall.

Any thoughts on this, fellow-LEDers?

This brings to mind the whole discussion that appeared in the LED some
time ago regarding the *Google Sandbox*.  With reference to that, this
link is to an article that calls the sandbox *mythical* and goes on to
say why, all with stuff that seems to make reasonable sense:

http://www.sitepronews.com/2008/07/02/the-mythical-google-sandbox-and-
how-to-escape-it/

It supports the thought that *waiting-to-begin-linking* is not a good
idea. If a website isn't *really in good enough shape to receive new
visitors*, should it really be residing anywhere but on a local computer
(or network).
