Subject: Expensive Gasoline: Helping or hurting your online sales?

I'd be interested in polling the LED group on the impact of high fuel
costs on your online business.

It seems that there are two offsetting factors:

1) expensive fuel ==> less $ for other things ==> lower sales

1a) ==> higher freight costs ==> lower profits

2) expensive gas ==> less time consumers spend away from home ==> more
time spent online ==> increased sales

2a) ==> less price sensitivity to shipping charges ==> more willingness
to shop online

On net, is the high price of fuel helping or hurting your online
business? Anecdotally, it seems to be neutral or slightly helping us,
but it's hard to tell.

Are high fuel prices accelerating the shift of retail sales to the web?
I'm curious as to others' experiences.

Chris Allen

Joe - I'll refer you and other LED-ers to a very thorough and
informative thread at crea8asite forums. http://www.cre8asiteforums.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=60987

In short, some advanced control recommendations are given (i.e: reverse
DNS, forward DNS to IP confirmation to catch masked bots and indepth
dynamic trap, time, and block bot-busting procedures, etc.)

In the final analysis, there's really no fool proof method to exclusion.
Check it out, should be helpful.

Subject: Competitor's web site hits

Hi All,

This is a question posed by one of my clients: Is there a site I can go
to that will tell me how many hits a particular web site gets each
day/week/month? Or is this proprietary info that I can only get from the
person who manages their web site?

(This client is writing a book promotion that includes marketing. He was
hoping that the many associations he belongs to will blurb the book;
necessitating the hits/day etc info.)

It seems to me there was something discussed here that, although it
would not be totally accurate, would give some indication... could it
have been the unreliable Page Rank I'm thinking about?

Thanks for any leads.

While it doesn't compare to Bacon's/Cision (and doesn't really try to)
HARO is an excellent free resource. We've received press and book
coverage as well as several of our clients as a result of monitoring and
responding to the queries.

I'd have to agree, sending out free press releases about something can
really help it go viral if it gets traction. I wouldn't recommend paying
for this, but the free press release sites are pretty useful.

Here is a list of over 20+ free press release sites that you can send
your info out on. The list is updated as of June 8th.

Will is absolutely right. Brad and I came upon this source from
different directions - and we both use Help a Reporter Out (HARO). Note:
There is no charge to join this mailing list.

Peter has grown his list in a couple of months to over 12,000
subscribers (also something to learn from him!). The quality of the
publications (print, radio, TV, Internet) is comparable to a very
expensive service.

Using this service, I've been able to get publicity for myself, my
friends, and my students. This service not only lets you forward the
queries - it encourages you to do so! The paid service will eject you if
you share the information.

HARO also a good source for you to post your queries if you want to
interview someone, get subjects to provide information for your blog or
your book. And more.

In fact, by posting a query which includes your own site, you may get
some visits from curious journalists.
