From: Dave Mead
Subject: Anyone been able to rectify a wrong Alexa listing?

My website (www.dmwebsites.com) is listed in Alexa, but not under my
name or my website!  Do a lookup and you'll see my predicament.  It
comes up as Comeclickbuy.com but with my screen shot.

This has been going on for sometime, years in fact and I've never
been able to get it resolved.  I've emailed Alexa and the person
that is listed as the "owner" who doesn't even have his site up last
time I looked.

If anyone can shed light on who to contact I would be most
appreciative.  I'd like 2006 to be the year I get a lot of these
niggling little things sorted.

Thanks,

Dave Mead

Subject: Commercial CMS products

Hi fellow LEDers.

I would like to seek out other's experiences using commercial CMS
products.

In particular, I'm researching CMS products that have the following:

- Update capability for 20 to 30 people for specific areas of the
site.

- Multi-level access control.

- Multi-stage publishing (a writer posts an update, which is
viewable on a test environment, the editor approves and publishes to
production).

- Logs.

Thanks,

Laura C. Teeple

Sorry, Salem, but there really isn't any consensus, which is one of
the really cool, albeit frustrating, things about the web. While
there are some obvious no-nos, there's also a relatively wide swath
of what's right, depending on the goals, tastes and concerns of the
site owner and site visitors.

You need to read everything that's out there and decide what's right
for your client, based on that client's needs and wants.

Don't think of it as paralyzing ... think of it as freeing. You've
got the skills and the intellect -- and the opportunity to select
what should work best. It really is a pretty cool concept.

With warm regards for the New Year to you and all the LED'ers,

I disagree.  No one technique will suit all of us, and we're not a
standards committee.  Take what seems to fit your needs, and leave
the rest.

A forum can't be all things to all people.  Everyone has some holes
in their experience and needs some simple explanation occasionally,
but IMO if a beginner can't get anything out of the discussion here
maybe he should find a newbie forum someplace and come back when
he's "grown up" a little more professionally.

Just my $.02.

Vonage and other services such as inter-office intercom may be the
next coming thing if you can get it. It is not available everywhere.
I have broadband service but it is not available where I live.

Re: display size

One thing no one has mentioned -- people occasionally print from
websites!  I changed the design of my site *real* quick when I
noticed how many people came in my shop with printouts in their
hands.

You're probably thinking of Browsercam, Rick:

http://www.browsercam.com/

It's no longer cheap -- a month's access is $59.95, or you can have
a single day for $19.95! But increasingly web developers are setting
up group memberships to spread the cost -- an anunal mebership at
$400 can be shared with up to 10 users.

What we use these days is http://www.browsercam.com. It's the most
economical way to do basic testing of a website in various
environments without having to shell out for the equipment.

These days it also does real captures, so it looks a little better
than a cam frame.

Interesting!  When I sent in my original post (Jan 4), the Golden
Web Award Web site was still functioning (as well as the IAWMD.com
site, if I remember correctly).  Your further comments show just how
meaningless some Web "awards" can be.  I didn't know this a
background about the award, but I did wonder about what it took to
win one (sounds like not much).  I do remember hearing comments a
long time ago that very often sites that won awards were often
showing off the latest and greatest but were not necessarily very
user friendly.

> The splash page is old-school - couldn't with

Lee, the audio on the splash page is the sound of a waterfall (to go
with the moving image), the next page plays "Dance of the Sugarplum
fairy" for the Nutcracker Suite.  Both are cute the first time
through but rapidly become very annoying.  Glad to see your reaction
to the site design / layout matched mine.

Podcasting is probably the solution your client wants to look into.
