From: Beth Durkee
Subject: New Post - Blind Views or Blind Visits

We've started using a new web stats package and we're seeing a lot
more data on our site visitors. One report shows a significant
number of "blind visits" or "blind views" -- What do these numbers
indicate? The product itself is intuitive but the documentation is
not great. I'm stumped for an explanation for these numbers! I'd
appreciate any insight.

Thanks,

From: Michael Linehan
Subject: New Post - Spam: Know Thy Enemy

I recently had some email correspondance with a site owner who
needed a little assistance.  Then a surprise -- he decided he'd be
helpful back by telling me how to spam effectively! (I don't spam
and never have.)  One of the URLs he gave me was this:
http://www.emailsmartz.com/asp/spider.asp.  Take a look through
their products.  This is what you are up against when you are trying
to protect yourself from spam.

He was also telling me that protecting by encoding no longer works.
Part of what he said about the double-encoded ASCII / javascript
email link on my site was:

----------------------
"Actually even decoding yours the old way, would be child's play -
just look for JavaScript tag and ask js to see if it's hex, binary
or dec - 1 line of code for each - the rest is done by js libraries.
But doing it this way is slower and cumbersome. However the code for
this is also freely available on web. There are 2 ways to protect
your email - an image of your email or don't publish it."
----------------------

Mind you, it seems to be working for me so far.  But still,
disturbing.  So I've switched my site to a form.  Anyone have the
technical knowledge to KNOW for sure whether encoding no longer
works?

Here's what one anti-spam product says on that topic - which would
seem to confirm what the spammer told me. (I have not tried this
product myself - this is just for the information that encryption
does not work.)

----------------------
"At present some programs collecting email addresses can already
decrypt addresses encrypted with almost any method and add them to
their database. Neither javascript cloak, nor HTML cloak can help.
To protect against such email harvesters, you should not specify
your email address on web pages in any form (neither plain nor
encrypted) and Email Cloaker for Web 1.2 allows you to protect your
addresses in such a way."

Subject: Backlinks

> Yes, search engines can and do index links
> in PDF and other types of files.
        - Shari Thurow, LED 2166

Thank you Shari, this answered my question. One of our products is a
PDF creator and if it's not registered it places a notice on the
created PDF (no other limitations) that includes an absolute link to
our website. We had a discussion whether to make this time limited
or leaving this as it is, but given that we'll have the benefit of
the backlink it will remain as it is (probably changing the link to
be anchor text would be better).

Subject: Feedback forms

Will Bontrager posted on this topic yesterday and was careful not to
blow his own horn. You may be interested in his article on forms
hijacking:

There is a link at the bottom of his article to his new service that
guarantees hijack-proof forms.

I use MasterFeedback with the lines of code in his article to
prevent line feeds in the headers. Additionally it has my email
address only in the script, not on the form itself, so it can't be
harvested.

From: John Smart
Subject: Feedback forms

We used to use the 'standard' allegedly secure CGI script for our
forms, then one night someone kindly sent 20,000 spams out through
our server. I wrote my own form software - and it is so easy, yet
unhackable. I have a script on my site - I give all my domains a
unique ID (a number) that they include as a hidden field on their
form. Their form submits to my script - which gathers their e-Mail
from a database and send the form to them. It cannot be rerouted to
a different recipient, and the code that went into it is pretty
simple!

Well, Go-Daddy and others may be cheaper, but if you really want
excellent service you should use PairNic.com to register your
domains and Pair.com to host. Period. THE best. AND, they help keep
this Digest going!!!

        - Tom Anson, LED 2166

In OutLook Express, it's a 3 click approach. 1) a right click at the
message, 2) select Properties & 3) clicking 'Details' tab will
reveal the headers.  You can also view the entire message  through
the 'Message Source...' button in this tab.

BTW, my junk mails are around 30 - 50 per mail ID per day.  I have
to handle mail IDs for different websites, so it adds up to 200 -
250.

My main mail ID is more secluded than the others.  I preferred to
test unsubscribing in one of my other ID where I get only forum
digests (not our LED), opt-in mails & spam.  In a way this mail ID
is not very vital & can risk a test.  Mail arrivals today morning
was 42 of which spam count is 39.

Most of them have no unsubscribe links.  I clicked the only link
available in these mails, and almost always, the resulting page have
opt-out (or remove me) links at the top.  I have unsubscribed in 4-5
mails.  However, I have no confidence in the Viagra, Cialis type
sites & haven't ventured unsubscribing there.

Some of these unsubscribe links goes to an idential looking
newsletter unsubscribe forms.  May be those spam list sellers bundle
an newsletter script along with their list.  I intend to unsubscribe
in this mail ID regularly.  I will inform my results as well.

Subject: Spam study

I use Eudora, which has an option in the toolbar named "blah blah
blah". When clicked on, this expands the heading to show everything.
Two suggestions: look around Outlook to see if it offers such an
option or switch to Eudora. Actually, by switching to Eudora you
enjoy another benefit - avoidance of most of the emailed worms and
such that are targeted towards Outlook.
