Hi Martha
Just to split theological hairs ... the Google sandbox is more
analogous with limbo than purgatory. Purgatory is where you go for
your sins - limbo is where you wait, sinless, but denied paradise.
You do so until the end of the world, which makes it even more apt.
good luck with the site

I haven't read every LED lately, but has someone mentioned toolbars?
If you have a Google or Yahoo toolbar, and are working on your own
site. Would this not allow it to be flagged for crawling?

- Jean-Jacques Joseph, LED 2171
Basically, GIF instead of JPG because for a graphic image (as
opposed to a photograph), a GIF image usually results in a smaller
file. I am not sure, but since these images are generated
on-the-fly, I suspect that it is easier to create a GIF image.

Don't be afraid. Your site actually has a lot of room for
improvement that will boost your rankings even further. Remember to
design not only for the search engines but also for your visitors.
Increase your use of CSS to reduce overall file size, increase
download speed, and increase ease of maintenance. Convert your
javascript menus to CSS menus that search engines can follow.
Incorporate the use of HTML heading tags (e.g. h1, h2, h3) and put
targeted keywords in them that make sense. Keep filenames the same
so that you don't lose any rankings achieved for them. Create a
custom 404 errors page to catch anything you might have forgotten.
Make better use of your real estate. Put useful content higher up
on your site (top of the fold). Many users may not scroll down to
see what you have.
Make it obvious what you have to offer. Websites are not like
jokes, where you save the punch line until the end. Tell them what
you have to offer as succinctly and quickly as possible so that they
stick around to find out more -- otherwise they may never stay to
get your whole message.
Make more use of bullets, bold lead-in text for paragraphs, shorter
paragraphs, etc. People skim websites and will not take the time to
read walls of text.

Subject: Ransomware
This seems to be the latest hideous scam. Perhaps those who targeted
the customers of Barclays and other banks have found themselves a
whole new set of victims. Their methods are described in this piece
on the BBC.
The scam starts when a piece of malware ("malicious software") gets
onto your computer, which then scrambles your files, so that they
can't be accessed. In order to access them again, you have to pay a
ransom to or buy drugs from a very nasty crook in somewhere like
Russia.
This type of scam shows how you must keep your virus and spyware
protection up to date. It also shows the value of keeping good
backups, as the lady in the story obviously didn't take this basic
precaution.
One of the good points about ransomware, is that as it such a vile
threat, it will probably affect someone of influence and power. They
might persuade technophobic Tony to have a word with Bush and Putin
about spammers and other on-line criminals.
