Subject: Penetrating AOL Email Defenses

There has been a lot of indirect talk of mailing lists - and I have
encountered a very frustrating issue. I created a form handler to
protect our web sites from spam attacks. The script mails the
intended recipient with the form content. But the forms never reach
AOL users!

I have spoken to some of the admin at AOL -- followed all of their
advice to the letter, but I cannot get a script generated mail to
penetrate the AOL defences.

For those curious -- the steps I took were including a bounce
address, making sure the script sent it from a real account not a
default script handling account (such as This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it )
proper structure for the headers, proper content for the body - no
words on the 'hot lists'. And still the mail does not get through.
This was in PHP but I have still spoken to some very intelligent ASP
and Perl programmers who are having the same issues.

Have any of you experienced this issue - and do any of you have the
answer to this problem??

Subject: Ranking tips

Steve Pronger made some good points about achieving high search
engine rankings with articles [issue 2182]. He suggested using
article directories like EzineArticles.com, and that's a good start.

But don't stop there. Why? Because on the Internet, there is a herd
mentality. Which means that if one person says that submitting to
article directories is a good idea, then thousands of people will
start doing it. With less success than the early adopters had.

This is not to say that submitting articles is a bad idea. It means
that you need to get creative and diversify beyond doing what
everyone else is doing.

Case in point: My studio recently won a design award. I used my
accounting software to help me perform a calculation that went into
the "results" section of the essay that accompanied my entry.

Once I got the good news from the judges, I sent a testimonial
letter to the software company. They just asked me to write a user
success story for their website, and, if all goes well, that article
will include links to all three of my websites.

> 7. Write an article and submit it to article directories
> There are lots of article directories out there, and software
>  for multiple submissions, but start with the best...
        - Steve Pronger, LED 2182

This is now bad advice. Most of the free article directories are
being filtered out by Google, in terms of building up backlinkage.
Furthermore, many people have noticed that spammers scoop the free
articles and use them to create SpamAd sites.  So not only do your
articles help increase the amount of duplicate content out there,
other people are using them to make money.

Pay no attention to PageRank. It's a useless, worthless measurement
and does not indicate quality of page, link, or reference.

It's a shame that people continue to pass around such outdated, bad
advice despite months of debunking these kinds of SEO myths by many
well-informed people in the industry.

To get good rankings, you need to write interesting content, post it
on YOUR Web site, and optimize it. Don't limit yourself to 250-500
words of content.  DO use BOLD tags, Hx header tags, ALT= text for
images, etc.  DO build good internal linkage using straight HTML
links.

Stick to the fundamentals.  Don't go for these cheap tricks.  Right
now, many people are complaining across numerous forums that their
sites have lost rankings on Google since March.

They all followed the bad advice about getting tons of cheap links
from free article submission, press release distribution, obscure
free directories, reciprocal links, and paid links.

Look and learn, people.  Stop wasting your time and effort on these
useless link-building schemes and create content on YOUR sites that
people will want to visit and refer other people to, and that is
optimized so that the search engines can tell which keywords are
most important.

I just had to chime in and say thanks to Marios for the post.  I
personally had not used Digg previously, and I figured it couldn't
hurt to try. POW!  My traffic jumped from 5-10k hits per day to 45k+
per day, with new RFQs to boot.  :)

I realize that this will level off, but it's always a pleasant treat
to see a big jump first thing in the morning :)

Social bookmarking sp*a*m may have started. Within the last one
month you may have heard of the buzz surounding an internet marketer
by the name of Wu’s who launched a book titled

“Tag and Ping - The Next Generation of Blog and Ping”.

In Wu’s book he teaches that you can gain high pagerank backlinks on
demand in just 2 minutes by tagging pages of your website with high
ranking social bookmarking websites.

He makes specific mention of a few social bookmarking sites to use
this method with and he promotes abusing these sites by signing up
for hundreds of accounts to give the appearance that many people are
voting for your links to give them “popularity” and drive them up in
the rankings on certain sites to gain more traffic and backlinks.

This book is being promoted by some of the top "gurus" in internet
marketing.

Guess what? Spa*mm*ing of social bookmarking sites is now underway.

On 8th June, Jots.com, a social bookmark site was hit so hard by a
user named "Richiz" that its entire first page was taken up by his
results linking to his site

It's difficult to prove that a blog has positive effect on revenue,
but if you are in a business where you should publish updates, new
techniques or other useful information, then a blog is the quickest
way of doing it.

Very often, I write a note to someone about how to use a product, in
answer to a question.  A couple of years ago, I would have added it
to the web site.  Now, I cut and past it into my blog.  It's so much
quicker and cheaper.

        - Dirk Johnson, LED 2183

There you go again.  I never wrote any such thing.

As far as "natural linkage" goes, if you don't ask for it in any way
but get it, it's a "natural link".  That includes all the links you
create for yourself on your own Web pages.

I do not prompt or cajole or ask for natural links.  They come
simply because people choose to place them on their pages.
