How do you correct DMOZ listing errors? Does DMOZ even update its
listings anymore? There is much frustration apparent when dealing with this...

I have noticed that same title is in Google and MSN search results. Could this be the reason that my site dropped very much in Google and MSN? And if so , could anyone advise me, what I should do. Best regards, Baruch Avraham Aris Jewelry www.aris-titanium.com aris, 013.net ======== CONTINUING =============================== From: Brad Waller Subject: Hidden frames > From what we understand, by using > hidden frames, we have no opportunity > for the search engines to crawl the site - Chuck Woo, LED 2229 There are other alternatives. Instead of the hidden frame, ask them to set up a sub-domain for you. They are already giving you branding on their page, so ask them if they can give you a sub-domain such as "store.earwaxonline.com" which can be mapped to their IP address of 12.8.3.35. That way they still provide the service, but you get the domain branding. If you look at what we have done for our top affiliates such as Bronco Graveyard you can see that we have given them classifieds.broncograveyard.com which is mapped to our own server. There is more that we have done to make sure the content and branding are appropriate for each of our affiliates who we offer this service to, but this is no different from what your service provider could do for you. Brad Waller, VP http://adjungle.com waller, adjungle.com -------- new post - same topic -------- From: Will Bontrager Subject: Hidden frames > I am looking for suggestions on how we can > add keywords and tags to these hidden frames > pages to increase our search position. - Chuck Woo, LED 2229 Good to see your participation, Chuck Woo. When the content displayed within frames is a web page on someone else's site, spiders scanning the page will assign their findings to the URL at the other folks' site. If you have permission from the other site's owners to do so, a PHP script could retrieve the page at their site and publish it on your page, at your URL, where spiders can scan it on your web site. With a bit of programming, meta tags could be changed, body copy added / removed, and other modifications made to customize the page. It is of course prudent to obtain permission first. Otherwise, copyright issues may bring expensive legal problems. Will Bontrager http://willmaster.com/contact.shtml -------- new post - new topic -------- From: Michael Linehan Subject: HTML editors > I strongly recommend that you invest > the time to learn HTML... - Jere Matlock, LED 2229 I've got to strongly speak against this idea of hand-coding. I've been making websites since the first days of World Wide Web Weaver 1. So I used to hand-code. Anything beyond p, h1 etc, and bold was done by hand --- <, t, r, > and so on. For every tiny element. With even a modest modern website, this rapidly becomes incredibly laborious and time-consuming. We don't all hand-code our own Photoshop filters. Why not? We don't hand-code our formatting in Word. We don't hand-code our PowerPoint demonstrations. Yes, by all means, have enough knowledge that you can go in a fix a little glitch, or clean up redundant div tags. But do the same with websites as you do with anything else you do on the computer ---- use the most powerful tool that you can, while balancing that power with ease of use and time to learn. (For me, that means Dreamweaver or GoLive.) Michael Linehan, Marketing Alchemy http://www.marketing-alchemy.com -------- new post - same topic -------- From: Mark Roberts Subject: HTML Editor > I wonder whether anyone can suggest > a good HTML editor. - Richard Majewski, LED 2230 Another good editor... if you don't mind the fact that it is free is: Y2K Matrix. http://www.crystalfibers.com/index.php?topicid=20 It is an excellent editor. Mark Roberts http://www.robertscomputing.com -------- new post - same topic -------- From: Angsuman Chakraborty Subject: HTML editors You can use nvu ( http://www.nvu.com/index.php ). It works on Linux, Windows and Mac. --------------------- "A complete Web Authoring System for Linux desktop users as well as Microsoft Windows and Macintosh users to rival programs like FrontPage and Dreamweaver. Nvu (which stands for "new view") makes managing a web site a snap. Now anyone can create web pages and manage a website with no technical expertise or knowledge of HTML." --------------------- Overall my experience has been very positive with nvu. Best, Angsuman Chakraborty -------- new post - same topic -------- From: Judith Baar Subject: HTML editors Though primitive, I use Notepad for my web pages. When time permits I think I'll take a look at Note Tab Pro as this sounds good: > In Note Tab Pro, with a single key stroke you > can see what your pages look like in IE or FF. - Jere Matlock, LED 2229 My favorite book is: "Cascading style sheets : designing for the Web," Hakon Wium Lie, Bert Bos. I wish that was the first book I read and started from scratch there. I saw the book at the library and didn't get it at first as I thought it was more advanced and would look at it later. If memory serves, they thought up CSS. Judith Baar JBsImages.us -------- new post - new topic -------- From: Peter D'Aprix Subject: Hijacked Just an intermediate update and a thank you to those who have responded with in depth thought, time and help. To preface; I am a visual designer with little aptitude for the complexity of the engineering of the back end of the internet. I know next to nothing addressed in several of the posts and questions. I have actually sent your questions and suggestions for actions to the host server seanic.net both to get answers and give them suggestions to follow up. But Cheryl Berry had a very clear set of excellent questions [issue 2227]. I'll give you the best answers I have at the moment. > (4) how do you access your server - FTP, VPN, desktop > and what programs do you use for that access? I build my site using Adobe GoLive and use their FTP program to upload and manage files / folders on the server. > (5) how often do you review directories > and files on that server? Probably not often enough. I briefly check things out when I upload new story pages, but I don't usually comb through the directories. > (6) how often do you change passwords for that server? I have not done so in years until now. I think this nonchalance will be changing from now on! > (7) who do you 'know' has access to the server? I don't know anyone who has access on my end. Of course the server side folks and their assignees would know who has access from their end. A few more comments. I visited the link Adam posted [issue 2227] and found it interesting but way above my head. What I can say is other than my own directories on the hosting server, there is only a CGI directory which appears to be empty and two files called ".autoreply.msg" and ".autoreply.msg2". No .htaccess or other files, folders or directories. I am thinking after reading all your posts and the forum links, that perhaps "high jacking" is not quite the right description since my site was not replaced nor was the domain name redirected to another site or page nor to these porn files that were camping out on my server space. Perhaps "parasitic" is more accurate. Peter D'Aprix, Executive Editor GourmetVoyageurs - food and travel e-Magazine http://www.gourmetvoyageurs.com <Moderator Comment> To provide further information, here's part of Brian White's response to Peter. Brian is a Google employee: --------------------- "Hi Peter, "Thanks for sharing your story. It's important that more people understand the particulars of different varieties of site defacement. These actions are requiring site owners to be more vigilant over the files within their own hosting accounts, unfortunately. "From Google's perspective, we often see sites that are under new ownership by spammers, and they keep organic pages around as red herrings to throw casual observers off the scent. We err on the side of doing what's right for the user, and in your case, we did remove the site from our results. "It sounds like you have remedied the problem for now. I checked to see if you have submitted a reinclusion request, and I see none for gourmetvoyageurs.com. I recommend that you follow these instructions to submit a reinclusion via Google Webmaster Central (recently Google Sitemaps): http://www.google.com/support/webma...py?answer=35843 "If you include the same text as in this thread, the folks responsible for reinclusions will undoubtedly schedule a reinclusion." http://tinyurl.com/l27rq [forums.searchenginewatch.com] --------------------- I highly recommend setting up a site map via their "Webmaster Central" service. It's free, handy, and in this case, critical for speedy reinclusions. Hope this helps, Adam -------- new post - same topic -------- From: Richard J. Dudley Subject: Hijacked > 9) Place an index.html in every folder - Quoted in LED 2228 In regards to point #9, web servers are set to look for a default document to display in response to a URL request. If there is no default document, the server often returns a listing of the files in the folder (or an error page if the "directory browsing" option is disallowed). If a file list is displayed on a server which is not properly locked down and patched, hackers can literally write files directly to your website. Fortunately, most hosts are on the ball and keep their systems locked down, but this is one reason why I avoid the cheapest hosts. When you have an index.html or default.aspx page in your directory, this page is shown, and even if it's just blank, your site's attack surface is greatly reduced. Web servers have a list of index / default docs to look for, usually "index" and "default" with all the common extensions -- htm, html, asp, aspx, php, etc. You or your host can modify this list to suit your needs.
